Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Close the BFSSFG. There is no longer a need.

People will strip everything off a bike if left locked up long enough...

I think they really were referring to periodic maintainence and the possibility of damage to a multispeed drive. I know I've bent the RD hanger on my road bike before from having it knock into stuff (without realizing). My RD almost went all the way into the spokes when I downshifted!

True, but he was referring to the advantages of a single speed, compared to a geared bike.

"crank spindles need to be grease free on assembly, wipe it dry or you'll split your crank"

A: Only if you're the Hulk.
B: Do that if you never want to get it off again, or want an incorrect chainline.

What ******** dip*****s. I recently had to angle grind a crank arm off because it hadn't been greased and was seized on the spindle.

The guy on the left was pretty rad at the end of the vid with his knees cranking outwards and his fingers squeezing the brake though.

I saw a frame on my block stripped of its headset cups and bb. I was impressed.

Umm..from a mechanic to, presumably, a non-mechanic, that's quite ridiculous. Greasing the bottom bracket spindle risks scooting the crank arm further up onto the taper than it's designed to go, thus compromising the crank arm. A crank puller threaded into a crank arm should always remove the crank given the amount of pressure exerted in the process. You might have had a steel/steel crank arm/BB interface, which might've led to corrosion, but it's highly unlikely an aluminum crank arm would seize to a BB spindle.

Correct, you aren't supposed to grease the spindle or cranks. Aluminium and steel can corrode together, but a bit of penetrating oil and a crank puller should always get the job done. I've had a few that were a bit tough, but have never lost the battle. If they were cottered cranks, you did the right thing by cutting them off.
