I think they really were referring to periodic maintainence and the possibility of damage to a multispeed drive. I know I've bent the RD hanger on my road bike before from having it knock into stuff (without realizing). My RD almost went all the way into the spokes when I downshifted!

The guy on the left was pretty rad at the end of the vid with his knees cranking outwards and his fingers squeezing the brake though.

Greasing the bottom bracket spindle risks scooting the crank arm further up onto the taper than it's designed to go, thus compromising the crank arm. A crank puller threaded into a crank arm should always remove the crank given the amount of pressure exerted in the process. You might have had a steel/steel crank arm/BB interface, which might've led to corrosion, but it's highly unlikely an aluminum crank arm would seize to a BB spindle.
