Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano WH-RS10 Wheel Durability

There's no review on roadbikereview.com and I'd like to know what luck you guys have been having with them on your bikes.

I'm curious because they come on a bike that I'm considering for commuting which means me, a 185lb rider plus lights, a rack, and a trunk filled with work clothes which means a fairly heavy bike. I know that recent Shimano lowgrade and midgrade minimal spoke wheels have had durability problems so I'm wondering if the RS10's are any better than their predecessors..

Thanks.

Sounds like you just answered your own question...

I saw these wheels on sale at Nashbar and was curious about them as well.
They seem unbelievably low priced for a new set of wheels.

I think Shimano should be ashamed of their wheels based on price/performance ratio. Expensive heavy wheels that easily go out of true.

ProBikeKit has the RS10 wheelset for $175.00 ... Not sure of the quality however.

Stay away from that off-brand stuff like Shimano etc.

You'll be alot happier with a Campagnolo wheel set and gruppo

I think they'll probably ride like ......

......well like a set of $175 wheels.

Oh and with wheels you have to pay for shipping from PBK - FYI. It is not cheap either IIRC.

Yep, almost $50 is what they're charging for shipping on the Fulcrum 7 wheels I'm considering purchasing. Well, probably not considering any longer as I've read some less than flattering posts on those wheels here.

I've got about 600 miles on a pair of these wheels that I bought in the end of May.
They have been perfect. No issues at all.

I got them for $165 plus $12 to ship from Nashbar. I really can't imagine a better deal for a new pair of wheels.

Shimano RS-10s are garbage.

So were the R-500s that they replaced, and currently exist alongside of.

My riding buddy broke 4 spokes in the first month of riding. After I fixed the LBSs poor repair jobs and properly re-tensioned the wheel, it managed to finally go 200 miles before throwing another spoke. My buddy is currently riding a set of 105/Mavic CXP-22/DT Competition wheels that I built and have loaned him while he works on warranteeing and then unloading the garbage RS-10s.

My 105/CXP-22 wheels I believe are lighter. And he took them to RAGBRAI where they did fine. I've advised him to go Open Pro/Ultegra, or if he wants low spoke count to look into Ksyrium Equipes.

They came standard on my friend's $4200 Cervelo RS. Saw them and thought they have to be good wheels. Not the case. Now he's filled with regrets for spending so much on that bike. Didn't even get a full Dura Ace grupo

I've had good luck with my R500s (3200 miles and no issues whatsoever) and I'm not a light rider @ 160lbs. Sounds as though my experience with them has been better than most.

Sounds like it. Go play the lottery.

Also...160 while still outrageously fat by competitive cycling standards is 25 pounds below most Ti spindle or uber lightweight wheel weight ratings....puttting you in the "light rider" bunch. Sorry....or should I say congrats!?

How about

For all you guys breaking these wheels... its failure at the nipple, right? Are they ALU or brass nips? Ever try just changing out the nipples to see if you get better durability? This also depends on how flexy the rim is.

No...and no.

The spokes fail at the head where they have a crappy Aluminum head bonded on to them.

Also the Nipples are proprietary. Good luck finding any kind of replacements.

I'm 145lbs and got about 2500 trouble-free miles on mine before I upgraded.

165lbs and rode on my RS-10s for 1,700 miles. They served me well all during this time - no spoke breakage and still true. I just sold them via eBay for $120.
