Auburn Century - September 12

Here is a little jewel for those of you that like climbing. Check it out. Anyone planning on going?
Anyone done it before? I'm talking myself into the 140 mile option since I have ridden all the roads (except up to Robinson Flat) and need another long ride fix.

I've heard people call the Death Ride a warmup for this... You gotta do the Iowa Hill TT. Hi-ho Silver!

I am out on this since it's the same weekend as Folsom Cyclebration which I will be volunteering. Come do the TT on Friday, do the Auburn Century on Saturday, and then back to Folsom on Sunday for the circuit race or MTB race...

Have fun!

I did the "Lone Ranger" two years ago. I had met RyDaddy and Spinengineer in the parking lot. And I think one other BF'r. I remember trying to talk them into doing it with me.

Me thinks that since I had the flu a week before, it hurt a bit more than it should have. It's a tough ride. I might have to do it again.

Hey that other BFer was me! I did the Outlaw (110 miles) and thought it was a fun but hard ride. I would say my experience on this ride two years ago was harder than doing the Death Ride this year. I'm sure some of that is due to the better shape I'm in this year and the better pacing I did on Death Ride. Still, Auburn Century is formidable especially if you expend any energy at all on the Iowa Hill TT (I sure did!)

Redspoke, I'm too old to hang for three events. I'm looking for a portable bottle of O2 plus EPO for this sucker. I have done the Colfax to Dutch Flat ride several times and it is not easy. Couple that with Iowa Hill and Robinson Flat and it is a "mother", of a ride - no question.

This has way more pain in it than the Deathride. The deal is that it's mostly 1 big uphill, followed by a good bake in the sun, while you're being torched by a headwind as you ride the return route. It's great! This will be my 3rd time doing it. I just want to bust 20 minutes up IowaHill!

The only way I'm doing this is if I can afford to upgrade the groupset on one of my bikes and switch it to a compact!

Yes, this was a hard, gruelling ride, but it was fun, gorgeous ... and the best part was the cheerleaders at the top of Iowa Hill, cheering everyone on. I did the Outlaw too, and I was one of the last to finish. It had fantastic views, and still debating if I'll do it again this year. A lot of it depends if I get in as Traveling Course Marshall for Tour of Missouri.

I rode the Outlaw 2 years ago (met BenRidin, silentben, and spingineer) and the Lone Ranger last year. This ride is awesome! I probably won't make it this year but I've learned of water stops... so I'll probably ride this self-supported before the end of the year.

My time up Iowa Hill was 17:24. Make sure you save some engergy for the remaining 90 miles.

Bummer. Missed it last year for the same reason.

Jim,
I sure hope you're bringing your bike up there, and at least get some riding in???

I could blame my recent hernia operation for skipping this one, but instead I will just say that it holds no allure for me. I've ridden to the top of Iowa Hill Rd about four times now and I think that's enough. I also find the rest stops and support inadequate compared to other organized rides in which I have participated. In addition, I live here and can ride those roads anytime I like if I so choose without having to pay for it. The whole event pretty much leaves me blah...

Yep. I plan on it.

Last year I rode the Saturday ride w/ MVBC. Good people. Lot's of laughs, and very welcoming to a Californicator.
This year, I'll prolly do the Sat. ride again. On Sunday, I plan to get an early start out of there and stop off in Ashland for some riding. The only question is do I drag along the MTB for Ashland or leave it home and ride road both days.

Ok, I am a puss. Lots of work tells me that I am doing the 110 mile option. I won't get home until late on 9/11, so, I'm not inclined the believe that I can not do the 140 and enjoy it. If you see an old guy on a Kestrel trying to get up the hills, give me a push :-)

Turns out the ride is the same day as my son's birthday. At least I have a good excuse to miss it.

Last year I was signed up for the 110 and ended up meeting a couple guys and riding the 140 route with them. If you're feeling good, your can change your mind during the ride. Fortunately, the most epic part of the ride is covered on the 110 route.

My issue with support is that you really have to set a good pace on the 140 route to make it to Robinson Flat before they close the stop. And don't expect much in terms of dinner when it's over with.

Overall, it's still an awesome ride.

I wonder what it will be like riding there in a few weeks....does part of the course pass through the burn area? How many volunteers are impacted (ie homes burned) or if any of the supplies got caught by the fire? Just curious...rides through disaster areas can be VERY SOBERING, and really change the mood of an event.

The course does not go through the fire area. Following Bowman, you turn right on Dry Creek road after Bell road. If you went left at dry creek (or Bell), it would take you towards the fire.

fire map (large file):

I unfortunately can't make the ride this year as it conflicts with my anniversary and son's 1st soccer game of the season. Iowa Hill is one of my regular routes. Will have to do it a couple of weekdays or Sundays in September instead. If anyone is interested, drop me a PM!

I don't think I'm up for the 110 and 140 mile options at the moment but I've signed up for the 70 mile ride. Should be a lot of fun. I'll be looking at the longer distances when I've got more miles under my legs.

I have a prior commitment so we won't be there.

We figured Joel or dauphin might ride with us if we went up there some other time. If we decide to ride Iowa Hill...
