BB Upgrade for new Dawes SST

I'm about to get a new bike... it seems to be a 10 year or so cycle for some odd reason. I found the Forums, read up and ordered a Dawes SST on the cheap with it appears alot of sealed bearing parts.

In corresponding with Bike Island about a Dawes SST currently on the way to me, https://www.bikesdirect.com/products/dawes/sst.htm

I had heard some had issues with the stock BB, and asked them for a recommendation.

They suggested a Miche 68 x 107mm as a replacement/upgrade.

I'm assuming they mean this one https://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ils&ProdID=804

Miche Primato Pista CR1620

I have read that this may have some loosening problems, and also that it is not a fixed cup and has some adjustment.

Do you think its worth the adjustability to offset the occasional need for tightening, or is there a better solution longer term?

I ordered a crank puller and BB tool to check/grease the one on the new bike before going very far. I'm just asking for down the road a ways if I have issues with the stock one.

Thanks for any replies/info...

First thing I did when the bike arrived was toss in in the bikestand and remove the cranks....i tightened everythingand switched the brakes to motostyle, I tend to put my bike in the rack at least once a week and check everything if for no other reason than it's cathartic

Well if or when it does have problems I may be in the position to replace the rest as well. Crank, BB, chainring, as a set. If not $30 for a Miche isn't bad.

I should invest in a stand... is there a recommendation on a strong one that has folding legs to stash it?

I'm not sure I have to space to just keep a stand setup. If I do I may tend to just park it in the stand, but then I'd be tempted to mess with it more... maybe thats good or bad.

consider the shimano UN-54. super durable (mtb bb) and smooth, install it an forget it. I trashed 2 loose ball bb's, and since installing the shimano sealed one, haven't thought about it again. and i ride cross on my SS.

stand I have a Park PCS9 it works it folds and I have a rollaway with my tools in it right next to it so i don't ned to have the tool tray option. If I decide to replace my BB and cranks it will likely be with a White Industries Eno crankset.......but right now that ain't in the budget

I wonder why they would say a 107? Then again Tech support from them sucks.

The stock bb is 103. Get a Sugino 68x103bb and you are good to go.

The Miche is fine, you should just put some blue loctite on the thread cups since A) the drive side does not have a lip so you can't synch in down B) the non-drive side has no lockring to prevent it from backing out.

That said, I have had good luck with Token BB's (avaliable in JIS/ISO tapers). They are basically just like Shimano ones, but come in a 102mm length for ISO. Campy square tapers are the best, but expensive and hard to get nowdays.

I've got a Spin Doctor G3 workstand. It folds up nicely and seems to be pretty stable. I've been using it regularly for about a year and a half, and I have no complaints.

Now that does look sturdy and it folds up nice and tight like a drum/cymbal stand. Thanks for the info!

I'm still a lil out in the woods on the whole BB spindle size/chainline, fixed cup vs adjustable, thing. I will take some measurements when the bike comes in and sort it out. If the chainline is straight I'll just grease, and check the stock one and see how it goes. Thanks for all the replies so far...
