Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Depends on the hill!! Some long and steeps ones just burn me, forget about the 10 miles canyon I descended. Legs were toast afterwards.

Of course.

The point is that only a fixed gear system has the ability to SLOW the bike, a freewheel doesn't ever have the ability to do this. And this slowing effect doesn't necessarily have to be intentional on the part of the rider.

Whenever I read lines about how a fixed gear can help push the riders feet through the dead spots, (like when their legs tire while climbing a hill) I always think, well of course it can... but that energy had to come from somewhere.

Unless you have a Magic Gear!

I would say it's a trade off...

FG: There are times in the flats (especially) when you can reduce your input and maintain the same speed due to momentum. This DOESN'T work when you are pushing uphill and going downhill you are spinning to keep up.

SS: Coasting in the flats, coasting down the hills. How much energy does this save vs. the forward momentum you pick up on the flats in a FG?

I don't know but both are fun in their own way. It's been said before but ride your bike and find out what you like! I ride one bike FG and one SS and I probably wouldn't change the set up of either because I like the variety of both.

well, tested:

https://www.strava.com/activities/288506620

got one flat tire, and forgot my water bottle in the car
so, the final opinion? Meh! Didn't find it was any better. Will keep my bike fixed

BUT, at least I could test my DIY prison looking tool for wheel nut removal, and it works like a charm. Also, remembered how bad it is to pump a road tire with a small pump....
