I have also been thinking about a new wheelset because I just nuked my crappy suzue basic yesterday (lockring threads gone). I was originally thinking some phils laced to deep v's, but keith at cavern cycles was convincing me that I'd be best served by level hubs laced to cxp33 rims. Its not going to look as pretty as phil/deep v's, but it may be better in the long run. What do you guys think about a silver wheelset on this bike rather than the silver/black ones it has on now? (link to bike below, but its all changed pretty much except the wheels and frame)

those hibs hhave alot more holes drilled than their are spokes. i think that those wheels put to much stress on the holes that are used which runs the risk of breaking them. id wanna get an opinion from someone who knows this stuff before i bought those

Dream wheels: PW high flange SLR 28f/32r, fixed/fixed in black. Sapim CX-ray aero spokes. Rims: Zipp 415 carbon clinchers (rims used for 303 wheelset.)

Status: Sacha has the rims. As of 2 weeks ago, the spokes had been out of stock, but were now made and at the "blackening" stage. Since this would take a little while, I'm having the original hubs swapped for the SLRs. Also, Brent at PW said they didn't make any 28F for this first run of the SLRs, he would get the guys to knock one out and send it to Sacha.

Completion: Dunno. Maybe May. This is a side/weekend project for Sacha (so as not to disrupt his regular scheduled frames.) Mine will be done when it's done. The extra time has made it possible to change around the hubs. And the 17t PW cog should be out then too.

paul black high flanges, silver spokes, plain open pros. i have a rear wheel just like this now and it is light, perfect and stable. understated and bombproof.

maybe i'm just too old, but i'm just not turned on by the pretty bikes.

are those going on the cannnondale? did you get that frame yet? I was thinking low spoke count too but decided to go traditional on the fixie.

Anyone know how well annodized wheels hold up as far as scratched go? I lock my front and rear together so would they get messed up?


My vote is go either a stealth all black bike or black and white scheme which is what i'm gonna go for. anyone know where i can score some white spokes?

Give me a bombproof version of Nimble Crosswinds. Short of that, I want black Zipp track hubs on black Deep-Vs. It's too bad things like the Corima 4-spoke wheels don't stand up to potholes and the like too well.

now mind you, this is strictly based on observation, but I think the deep vs are like the pbr of rims. Everybody wants them, but not for reasons that make any sense. Other than color availability I can't see any reason to choose them over any number of other rims. They're heavy, they've got no eyelets and I just don't understand how people can like that big flat sidewall. Unless money is a concern, there's much better choices out there.

i <3 my silver phils laced silver to anodized gray open pros. i polished the hubs up nice and clean so they reflect sun in two circles elongating on the ground when i ride.

if i were to get a new set, i'd want the same. maybe a skinnier wheel than the 700x23 i've got now. and i'd ride it brakeless so i wouldn't eat up the paint.

When I was discussing rims with Marcus he made a few suggestions concerning what would make a good rim for Chicago's urban environment. Chicago is flat and has nice smooth patches of roads but as you head out of the downtown area, there are some really bumpy streets that stretch for miles and miles with potholes and debris galore. I also tend to ride in industrial areas for photography excursions and because I like exploring abandoned buildings from time to time.

Given where I'd be riding, the following suggestions were made:

Velocity Deep V's
Velocity Fusions (lower profile, a mix between a deep v and an aerohead)
FIR Net 97

I've also talked at length with many other people and shops about Sun Venus rims and Mavix CXP33's.

Granted, I wanted the look of the deep V's and I'm not all too bothered by weight. Marcus also said he liked building with Velocity's especially the Deep V's because they come rounder and hold up to a lot of abuse. Which is what I wanted, a strong functional wheelset that would hold up to Chicago streets. And that's what I got.

While many may go for aesthetics alone or word of mouth (which isn't a bad thing by far), you should get the rims that suit your riding style, your body/weight and where you'll be riding your bike.

In the future, I'd like to try the Phil Woods again (they are buttery indeed) with some Open Pros on a touring style/randonner bike. I've heard good things about those rims.

i have my dream wheels.. black surly 135mm OLN free/fixed laced with black spokes to salsa delgado rims.... oops, but these are on a SS MTB, sorry for being such a jerk and ruining this fixie wheel partay. MUAHAHAHAHAAA

but anyhoo my fixie wheelset im going to be lacing soon will consist of an old school dura-ace front hub, the stepped flanges style where all the spoke heads face in, black spokes, white or black velocity aerohead on the front. for the rear a polished paul laced with black spokes to a white or black deep-v. since all i have is the frame (thank you t-town) im not really sure what kinda component color schemes i wanna do...

I chose the Deep V's for the same reason as absntr. They are well known for their ability to take a beating. While I know others live in my neighborhood that ride on Open Pros and MA3's and have not had any significant problems, I really wanted a rim that was bombproof and they seemed like a good choice. To be honest I really don't like the look of the Deep V as much as a standard non-aero road rim but for me it's about having a sturdy wheel that will last me a long time not a fashion show(but it is fun to have a nice looking bike)

I agree with the DT Swiss poster. Those are nice rims and I saw a pair laced to black Phil single sided here in DC the other day. Very nice. I have a pair on my DT 240S hubs on my RB. Easy to work on and not easilly damaged.

I'm about to build up a Level rear hub (flip flop fixed/fixed) with black DT 14/15 spokes and a Sun Mistral Rim (very light, low profile V-section, greyish). My front wheel is a Sun Mistral on a 20H Phil road hub with DT bladed spokes. The rim for the back is a little shop worn so it won't look perfect, but I'm less concerned with flash on this bike, then I am with having a matching set of wheels (like the unitary feel, don't care so much about a perfect look). (Although the spokes won't match - I'm ok with that). No more slipping lockrings, fussing about with that stupid wrench, blah blah blah. Built 32H 3x it should stand up to daily 30mi rt commutes on bumpy bike trails and the occassional skip/skid. I did get a front brake so I don't do that as much anymore (but that is kind of a separate thread).

While I imagine they would work fine for the track, you are right. Kind of a weak choice for a nice wheel.

I think my dropouts are 120's (it's the grey one) but I think this hub is spaced 130... doesn't make sense why a surly-surly setup wouldn't work, but...

Your dropouts are 120mm - 130, 135 is for mtb or odd spaced frames. You could cold set your frame but if you ever decided to switch back to a normal hub you'd have to get spacers to make up the 10mm difference on each side or get some 130mm Phils.

In the end I'd skip it though.

edit: however, the price is nice.
