First Conversion

Hey all! I’m pretty new to the game and I’m working on my first conversion. I have an (almost) all original Schwinn Continental and I need some help/confirmation/constructive criticism. I know that this is a heavy bike, but it will be used solely for leisure so I don’t really care, and I’m planning on getting some lighter pieces anyway. The plan is for the frame to be yellow and the rest of the bike to be white. So, cable, calipers, rims, chain, crank, bar wrap, etc. in white (Only planning to ride on dry days so I don’t think I need to worry about them getting too dirty). I’ll link what I’m looking at so you know more specifically. I don’t want to buy what I don’t need so I thought I’d ask people who know better. The biggest questions are as follows:

Will 700c wheels work? The originals were 27” but I can’t seem to find that size in white.

Amazon.com : Pure Fix Cycles 50mm Wheelset, White : Bike Wheels : Sports & Outdoors

Now if those wheels do work, will these calipers work? Or will they not reach? I’ve read a lot about them not reaching on older bikes, but if I understand all of this correctly the 700c rims will make that work. (If not, please enlighten me. I can’t figure it out.)

Amazon.com : Sunlite Dual Pivot Brake Caliper - 1 Pair, Front/Rear, White : Bike Rim Brake Sets : Sports & Outdoors

Next are the parts for the BB/crankset. Any comments?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BKP6QO8/...7BRQ6TOE&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003UQ09XY/...WSA8PFN9&psc=1

Amazon.com : Wellgo 9/16-Inch Fixed Gear Platform Pedals, White : Bike Pedals : Sports & Outdoors

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JWZXVRS/...V87T0X82&psc=1

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005DTIG9U/...EUJIDKRI&psc=1

If there is a better place for me to post this, let me know. I don’t mean to be lazy and not scour the forums for each question, I just want to make sure that I’m not missing anything. Feel free to make any suggestions. Thanks!

Sam

What year is the bike?

700c wheels fit just fine

You'll need spacers for the rear hub, or you'll need to cold set the rear triangle down to 120mm.

Your crank/adapter will work but I'd recommend this adapter over the black ops unit for a more precise fit. Euro to American Bicycle Bottom Bracket Adapter - SILVER

Check with State, but I believe you'll need a 103mm BB for that crank, not a 110mm.

Check in the "Mechanics" or "Classic and Vintage" forums for info on the brakes.

You're asking us if you can.

You should be asking if you should.

Reassurance. Not everyone is experienced in piecing a bike together.

SquidPuppet - Early 70's, not sure exactly. Thanks for the info! Would you recommend spacers over cold setting? And for the BB, something like this? https://www.amazon.com/Sunlite-Square...bottom+bracket

Cute Boy Horse - Maybe, but that isn't what I need/care to know right now. I might be wrong, but I learn better by mistakes anyway

sickz - I thought I was pretty clear about that at the end. hairnet got it, just some reassurance.

hairnet - Thanks for the info! I'll keep that in mind. And +1 for reading/understanding my whole post hah

I'd measure the frame first. I've used one 4mm spacer on each side to fill an 8mm difference, but bigger than that, I prefer to set the frame. Just my preference though.

I bought the exact same super cheapo BB from Amazon. Funny enough, it's smoother than some more expensive ones I've had. It "feels" like they use a heavier grease inside. I put it on a bike last summer and so far no problems. Not many miles though, but still spins super smooth and quiet.
