Bikes: 199? Landshark Roadshark, 198? Mondonico Diamond, 1987 Panasonic DX-5000, 1987 Bianchi Limited, Univega... Chrome..., 1989 Schwinn Woodlands, Motobecane USA Record, Raleigh Tokul 2
Many, many single speeds have the so called "flip-flop" hub, which allows you to switch from single speed to fixed gear. (You may find more info over in the singlespeed forum.)
With that said, I've bought bikes from bikes direct. My Motobecane is a nice bike. Definitely nice for the price. I have zero regrets from buying my motobecane from bikes direct. Just so you know, the Motobecane sold by that website is not the well known Motobecanes of the past (made in France.) They're completely different bikes.
Also, if you have no experience in putting a bike together, that should factor in to your decision to buy from bikes direct. You need at least basic bike mechanic skills to put a bike together.
I suggest going around to your local bike stores and trying out some single speeds there. Find what you like. Find the SIZE that fits you. I know some stores around here sell singlespeeds/fixies in that price range. Look around, don't rush into it. But if you do decide to buy there, I don't think you'll be disappointed with what you buy.

I'm not sure about that specific model, but the kilo TT model that BikesDirect sells for $399 has got a lot of positive reviews on here for a value fixed gear/single speed. I think you'll do better going with BikesDirect than say many of those cheap fixed gears you'll see online such as State, PureFix, etc.

Bianchi and Surly don't sell for $310 either, so it's still a good deal regardless of the marketing hyperbole.
