Steel Frames

Hello

What steel frames would you suggest buying in the $400-$800 range for fixed gear bikes?

Thanks

hardboiled718 06-10-15 11:58 PM

If I had the coin I'd spring for a bareknuckle

pwebb 06-11-15 01:12 AM

Bareknuckles are cool. also there are Toyo Godzilla, Cinelli Gazetta, All-City Big Block, Soma Rush are all good options. Could also look for a used non-dented NJS frame or a Schwinn Madison or Bianchi Pista from the past.

Soma Rush or EAI Bareknuckle.

+1 on Soma Rush

+2 Soma Rush. See mine in the Soma Thread

After a lot of research, for me it came down to the Soma Rush or the Colossi Mondial Track. The Rush had a water bottle boss...and then Soma had a big sale at xmas.

Colossi will put whatever brazeons you want for like an extra $50. I have one on order with 2 sets of bosses and internal cable.

Colossi seems like a great choice. I'm having them build a steel road frame for me.
plus you can do custom paint for cheap.

Agreed--they were super accommodating when I talked to them on the phone. Ultimately the price was going to run me +$200 more due to shipping, import tax and exchange (and Soma having a 25% sale at xmas). You're getting a lot more for that extra bit of money on the Colossi, though--there's a layer of chrome under the powder coating that they do on the frame, and it's a lugged frame. Columbus Zona vs Tange Prestige, though? That's a topic for another forum ;)

Yeah I'm stoked about this frame coming in. Have you been to their shop? David and the folks there seem real cool.

Yeah, Dave has been awesome to deal with so far. I have to meet up with him next week to have some more measurements done since I am going for a custom geometry.

Wait, I thought one of the benefits of powder coating (vs paint or chrome) is that it won't crack or flake off if it gets dented. It seems like powder coating chrome plating would just add expense (and a few grams of weight) to no benefit.

For $400-800 I would buy a 531 road bike frame with horizontal dropouts and then a month's rent.

On a bike that has chrome lugs and powder-coated tubing, how would you expect them to do it?

I wasn't thinking of chromed lugs and powder coated tubes, hence my confusion. That said, I could think of some cumbersome processes that might produce suitably jack-tastic results for another thread that's running around these parts.

I'll sell you this.

At the $800 range I'd go for a Wabi Lightning if I wasn't into buying rare-ish vintage-ish thingies.

Hello there, whats your name cute little fella? One of the Schwinns I want to own would be a Paramount and the list doesn't get a whole lot longer.

as far as OPs question on frames, All-City, Surly and Soma have some decent options all in 4130 Chromo.
