Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Wind. The destroyer of joy.

Yes, if you ride faster into it it pushes back on you harder. That's because if you ride 15mph on a calm day you will feel a 15mph wind blowing in your face. Hmm, go figure.

I gotta give this guy some credit for continuing on like he did with a bad stomach though... I mean, if my stomach's bothering me I'll whine about it while sitting in an arm chair the whole time.

.....And so the saga continues through Idaho, forevermore west!

Snipers! Yikes!

Wind. The relentless punishing bytch.

I'm trippin on these Warmshowers hosts that leave the door unlocked and say "Make yourself at home." It's great that there are cool, helpful, welcoming people out there, but that level of trust is surprising to me.

It's not so much the unlocked door that I trip on. It's the attitude of granting a 100% unknown stranger, literally someone you've never met, permission to enter your home while you are not there.

Oregon!!

Very close to the target. It'll be interesting when he gets close enough to say that he can smell the salty air of the Pacific.

I sent him a brief but positive and supportive email. I closed with a smartass comment about the return trip being a more southern route so that we could have pics of new and different scenery. He responded in kind by saying he was in fact taking a southern route home, and he'd take lots of pics...... from the birds eye view of the jet he'd be in. Hahahahaha

Who read this from Day 37? Holy!

"I checked out the exhibit, and afterwards asked the tour guide some questions, one of which was to verify the text I received from my warmshowers host the other night, who initially suggested I check this out. His text read: "Also, you had better believe the no trespassing signs between Idaho Falls and Arco. Snipers on patrol for the nuke lab." And...the tour guide verified this! She was hesitant to give me too many details, but yes, there is top-secret research being done in the area, and there are snipers and other defenses in place. She even said it was very likely that snipers had their scope on me at times. HOLY COW! Who would've thought?"

He'll be in Portland today.

He's chosen Oceanside as his completion point. Population ~350ish.

I've been following too, and I'm really happy for him. Has anyone shot him an email to say that he has a cheering section over here?

Hi all, this is Ari. I still can't believe this thread exists about ME. Seriously. It's humbling. I'm honored to have inspired fellow cycling enthusiasts about what can be accomplished with a little self-belief and perseverance.

I read about the whole ride, and I'm somewhat envious. It's very cool that you shared your experience.
