SS conversion question

I'm using my derailleur as a chain tensioner on my cannondale conversion but how tight should the chain be before I have problems?

Bikes: 34 frames + 80 wheels

It should only be as tight as necessary to keep the chain from falling off the chainring or cog. If you aren't having any problems, then just leave it alone.
