My Winsdor was 54cm and I bought it simply because the the rest of the components were so good, I knew it was gonna be small but I figured I'd deal with it (at the time I thought my optimal range was 56-59 until I rode a friends and realized it was more 57-62). My position on that thing was so aggressive and it eventually started hurting my back, nevertheless, I kept my stem slammed and flipped and rode it like that until I built up my Flite. Now I'm considering building it up with risers and throwing in some spacers to be a beater.

I'm 5'9 and one of my favorite rides is my 63cm KiloTT. Sure the saddle is slammed and I have to lean the frame on dismount to save the fellows. But I love the ride, it's fast and aggressive. Don't really care what people think.

must be nice. my lbs stocks bikes made for giants. 54CM is the norm and maybe you'll see a 52 every once in a while. meanwhile i have to find 49 and 48 cm bikes......

Not all shops carry them for some reason. I have seen a lot of them just max out at a 56cm and they can always order you a 58, or gasp, a 61 if needed.
|
Step 1: Walk into shop.
Step 2: Say "where the fixies" 3: Say "sick" 4: Buy, or have parents buy. 5: Ride the wrong way down the street, on the sidewalk, cross against the light without looking while crossing diagonally to the other side. Steps 1-4 and step 5 are actually the same behavior. oops, not PC... steriotypes are just too tempting |
One thing I never understood the range of manufacturer sizing compared to what people are riding.
Example...I was looking at a Pista Special that came in 49cm-63cm. My bike is a 55cm but I could also fit a 57cm and I'm just under 5'10". If you go through sizing threads (one example.. http://www.bikeforums.net/singlespee...ta-owners.html ), you'll find a LOT of the riders in the 6 feet to 6'2" range are riding 55cm and 57cm bikes. That's just one thread...I see a bunch of bike forum threads with similar heights/bike sizing (6'-6'3" riding 55cm and 57cm bikes). Yeah, I know, it depends on body proportions....but if so many riders in the low 6' - 6'3" range are riding 55cm and 57cm...what height do you need to be to ride a 63cm bike comfortably? That's 3-4 sizes larger. 6'8"-7'? |
You know that height by itself isn't a great heuristic for bike sizing, right?

I look at bike fit like wine club. Excessively large might be mad dog. Excessively small might be grape juice. There's lots of good stuff in between and who cares about oakiness, frutiness, or any other obsessively descriptive term one may choose to ponder over. Currently I ride three different frame sizes; smallest and largest are my favorites. Largest also has longest stem. One could argue this may be my max comfortable setup, then smaller just makes me more upright; but I've never found the smaller ones to be uncomfortable or unpleasant. On the other hand riding my daughters 16" mtb for a tune up is definitely grape juice.
|
What the **** is juice? I want some grape drink, baby!
|
I measured myself using about 2-3 fit calculators you can find online. All said I was roughly 54cm, 170mm crank, standard stuff. In real life when I ride stuff that is 52-56 it really works for me! Crazy right?
|
A lot of frames larger than 58 cm look a bit out of proportion, even with 700c wheels. That's just a matter of personal preference, but I'm guessing some tall people feel the same way and go for smaller frames.

That's funny. I'm not tall, yet I prefer the way big bikes look. To me, bikes 58cm and under look too small for 700c wheels. All in the eye I guess.

Do you guys still have problems with smog in LA? Never mind, you're probably too tall to be bothered by it anyway. ;)
Interesting. What's your take on double top tube designs that Rivendell (and others) produce? |

Do you have a really long torso/arms? You don't have much post showing, and your stem is decent length.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...uL._UX385_.jpg my inseam is only 30", i think an ideal seattube would be around 50 for me, but i think that might require a sloped TT |
