1 1/8" stems that don't suck..? (threadless)?

Looking for suggestions, perhaps there is something I haven't seen. The Cinelli Alter is my preference, but I can't seem to find anything out there that is good... Asthetic, slight drop.. No lugged stems...

Your opinions, greatly appreciated.

isotopesope 04-29-05 12:25 PM

the new thomson road stem is gorgeous, in my opinion. deda newton, pista or road, are nice stems too.

i like the look of this one:

highly subjective obviously...

I've always liked the mutant.
pretty hard to find these days though. especially in 1 1/8" and lengths less than 120mm.

I also like the nitto UI-5GX. +/- 8 degrees.
bensbike has them once in a while on ebay.

I thought the altars were 1".

I got one of the cheap-o stems from Tony at IRO. It's +/- 10 degrees. I'm going to try it out and if I like it I'll probably get a Thomson. The IRO one doesn't scream quality, but it gets the job done. I don't know how much more rise/drop you can get...that Deda Newton Pista has a lot of drop, but you have to run 31.8 bars.

that's why you get the new oversize deda pista bars... sexy. the aluminum ones are black, which would look nice with the black stem. the road one has much less drop.

fsa makes some nice looking threadless stems as well.

lala 04-29-05 01:13 PM

$$$ :)

flythebike 04-29-05 01:32 PM

I'm getting a Zipp stem for my road bike, to match the bars. I'm going to have to sell something...

The fixie has a Ritchey WCS road stem that I like a lot more than I thought I would. It actually feels stiffer than the Salsa stem (too short) that it replaced.

I've also run ITM Millenium stems before and they're nice and have a better finish than the Ritchey, but the Ritchey is much stronger.

Thomson stems are works of art. the kind of art robots will make when they take over the world. but really, I have no plans to ever ride anything other than thomson stems and posts for the rest of my life. or until the robots take over, whichever comes first...

I've found the aluminum ones too flexy for everyday riding but might be good for the velodrome. The chromoly ones are super stiff. Much stiffer than the nittos. 0 flex.

Take a look at the ITM Carbon. It's very nice.

I'm a big fan of Salsa cromoly stems (with their stickers removed). They're no longer in production but can still be found. http://aebike.com/site/images/librar...odl/SM8330.jpg

They're bringing em back! I'm glad, because that is my favorite threadless stem as well.

in SPRING 2006. damn. i noticed that no one seems to have had them in stock lately, but didn't realize they were discontinued. isn't that what salsa is mainly known for? they're still really popular stems, i just assumed they were having a supply shortage. i have an old cromoly s.u.l. quill stem i've been meaning to ebay - better do it sometime before 2006.

I've got two Mutants that I'm looking to get rid of. A yellow 110 and a black 100. If anyone is interested PM me. $10 each plus another couple of bucks for shipping.

SD Fixed 05-02-05 12:28 PM

Lugged will not work: the bike is not lugged. Anyone have a picture of the mutant?

your bike is hot, by the way. how heavy are those steel ones? my roommate has the aluminum ones on his newest track bike. he was using that stem, but he didn't like how deep the drop is. he has one of those new thomson's. i've just sort of goofed around on his bike, seeing as how it is waay too small for me, but liked the feel of the bars. i like aluminum bars though. i'll have to agree, steel nittos are flexy.

Funny, I just checked and mine doesn't have that big hole on the end.

I picked up a Full Speed Ahead Vision Stem; 90mm, small drop, shiny, black.
