Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Any good

Hi guys, been cycling every day for work commute and recreationally for the past few months, I'm 30 and wasn't in the best shape, 6'1" and 15 stone when I started, have already managed to lose nearly a stone and enjoying it loads. My main question is this, I ride a Fuji Track Comp fixed gear and can now manage an average speed of 30kph over a 9km ride, that is pushing hard for me, I was wondering whether that is any good or not?

Bikes: Heavy Pedal Zephyr, '16 Mash Work, '14 Cinelli Parallax, C-Dale Synapse Disc

Seems like a decent pace to keep.

Holding 18.6 mph for 5 miles is a good pace, especially if hills are involved. loosing 14 lbs is very good too. Keep it up and enjoy. Try longer and hillier rides. It is also quite a work out the hang with geared bikes. Not that they are faster, but they don't hold a steady pace and you are always tweaking your speed. Keep at it and have fun.

Ride Safe,

Joe

good is relative to you, everyone's got different fitness levels. every once in a while i think i'm keeping a good pace and get dropped by someone so it motivates me to pedal harder. as long as you're enjoying it and meeting your fitness goals keep going.

just curious are you riding in traffic or on a dedicated bike path? Also what gear ratio are you running on your bike? Those factors can affect average speed. also hills but someone mentioned that already

If the rest of the world reacts to seeing weight in pounds the way I react to seeing weight in stone, I apologize on behalf of America.

Bikes: ones with two wheels

like people have said good is a relative term. But if you take where you started from to where you are now and if you have dropped as much time as you have in weight in terms of percentage id say its a good progress. Now the challenge is to find where you plateau. So maybe set the goal for the end of the summer to be to drop another 1 stone and get your average speed up to 33-34 kph.

**edited for units

Thanks for the help/advice guys, I guess the main thing is I'm really enjoying being on a bike again and riding fixed is definitely an amazing feeling, I live in a pretty flat area, and yeah I think that sounds like a good goal to set, thanks again
