Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Urbanrider - searching my first bike

Hi

Im from Switzerland and dont have a lot of knowhow about bikes. Because my new girlfriend lives in the city and really loves cycling around she wants me to buy a bike. Well I already have a mtb, but now I wanna go for my first fixed gear or singlespeed. Im a person who cant really buy just anything, I always try to consider a lot of brands, options to be sure to buy something good which doesnt fall apart without some months. And I love the idea of customizing it, buying some stuff and working on it later, even if I dont have that much knowhow at this point

I read a lot of posts in the last days (without having an account). I found a lot of pots which mentioned the follow models:
- mercier kilo tt
- schwinn madison
- fuji track

Seems like this are some good starters. An idea of a bike I would consider as pretty cool:

Sadly, the mentioned models above arent as easy to get in Switzerland. I didnt even find something online about the mercier kilo tt. But I found another website which sells fixies which are fully customizable for a pretty good price. But I didnt find any tests, reviews or opinions about the quality of the bikes. Therefore Im a little sceptical about this. The price range is from 500$ to 900$, depends on the different components you can change. You cant really see the single components, but I found a list of an already customized bike in the shop:

Single Speed Bike

Can anybody with some knowhow tell something about the single components of the bike? If its good or bad, or okay for the price?

Ty,
Andy

I think 500 CHF is pretty expensive, but I'm pretty sure all the prices will be quite high in Switzerland..
It might be worth it to import from france or germany (not sure how the taxes thing works in Switzerland though).
Are you set on a steel frame? Also, what city are you in?

Bikes: Are awesome!

#KiloTT

Also, there is no way I would spend 500 on that bike.

The city is Basel Well I dont think it will be possible (as long as I wanna have a new one) to buy a bike under 400-500Fr. Its Switzerland - nothing is cheap here But its totally okey, I just want to be sure to make a good buy.

Im not set on anything at all. I just wanna make sure to buy a good starter. I love all these colored (a little bit thicker) rims and the bullhorn handlebars. But I guess if I would be able to buy the mercier kilo tt, I would just change some things and buy it in addition.

If you have some ideas or tips for good singlespeed bikes from german or french stores I will really appreciate it!

I didnt find the kilo tt at all in stores in Switzerland at the moment. And 500 here is...well, not a lot. Bikes which I found in US stores for 400-500$ are often 1000$+ in online shops from Switzerland But I guess that answers my question - the bike is not really worth the price with these components?

KiloTT is pretty much impossible to buy in Europe.. Trust me, I've looked just about everywhere when everyone kept spamming #KiloTT on this forum!
Apparently there's a shop in Basel: Fixieshop.ch
You could go there and they'll probably be of more help than the KiloTT spam around here.
If they recommend you something and you're not sure, you can still ask over here. People should tell you if you're good or not.

LA PIOVRA LO PRO X RAHMENSET

Old school steel Lo-Pro could be hecka fun. So long as you set it up right. Though my guess is you might not want to spend that much. If you can find a used 70s or 80s Cilo that fits you, you could do a conversion on that. I have a 6speed Road bike from them and it is a lovely ride with Reynolds 531! Plus if you ever decided fixed or SS wasn't your thing it is semi-horizontal drops and the provisions for running derailleurs.
