I have been a vegetarian off and on for the past thirty years and have not eaten any non-fish meat since 1993. I will have fish about once per month and only when I am eating out. I don't eat eggs and try not to eat dairy (I love pizza!!). From 1993-97, I was 100% vegan and it was during this time that I logged the most mielage on my bicycle (Cannondale T700) averaging almost 11000km/year during that time. It was also the healthiest period of my life.
Why vegan? Similar to other people on this forum but mostly I just want to live in harmony with my fellow creatures on this earth. I will return to the 100% vegan diet soon I hope. |

ride fixed, voted libertarian, like the environment, buying hybrid car, hate suvs, but going into petroleum industry. love love love love steak, bacon, steak, and more bacon. all things swimming, too. poor as hell, but will never touch beer that cost less than 5$ for a 6-pack.

I wonder how many of the veggies are cheating by smiling when they ride, thus intaking bugs?

There's a million grillion reasons to go vegan, but here's one that's particularly relevant:
"Dr. Per-Olaf Astrand conducted an informal study of diet and endurance using nine highly trained athletes, changing their diet every three days. At the end of every diet change, each athlete would pedal a bicycle until exhaustion. Those with a high protein and high fat meat (carnivore) diet averaged 57 minutes. Those that consumed a mixed (omnivore) diet, lower in meat, fat and protein averaged 1 hour and 54 minutes: twice the endurance of the meat and fat eaters. The vegetarian, high carbohydrate diet athletes lasted 2 hours and 47 minutes, triple the endurance of the high-protein group. (Source: Astrand, Per-Olaf, Nutrition Today 3:no2, 9-11, 1968)" From the "vegan" entry on wikipedia. |

PBR is a beer? What? I saw all the references to it and thought it must be a sports drink of some sort - electrolyte replacement....
Good to see that you are all in fact a bunch of drunks rather than electrolyte-replacing uber-athletes ;D |
Should'a had Dr Astrand test the carnivores last, then they might have the highest score.

i am vegan except for fish and some shellfish. tried being pure vegan for a while and was not able to keep up with the extra nutritional supplements required. been eating like this for four years, and at 34 have never felt healthier. only been fixed for a month. as to why i eat this way? a lot of reasons. i myself am healthier, and i feel better consciously, especially when i pet my dog. i would never want to hurt her. if you have ever seen footage from a slaughterhouse with what they do to creatures that are not all that dissimilar to my dog.... also, here is a little fact. agriculture pollutes more than all other industries combined. 70% of agriculture is to feed the animals killed for meat. i want as little to do with that as i can...

I am a level5 vegan. I don't eat anything that casts a shadow.

Being a vegetarian is related to riding a bike in environmental issues, as everyone stated above.
But riding a fixed gear is like eating vegan general tso's: Delicious and fun! |
i've been a vegetarian for seven years. i gave up fish about three years ago. i also don't eat eggs, and only sometimes eat cheese... otherwise i don't eat dairy. since this thread is turning into a beer thread as well, i'm a complete beer snob and don't drink crappy beer either. or crappy booze. sew there. i hate pbr. love newcastle. also, one of my other favorite beers is called arogant_bastard. how fitting.
oh, queerpunk, i just recently heard pbr is no longer union made... is there any truth to that? |
PBR is contract-brewed by Miller in Milwaukee. PBR shut down their own brewing operation years ago and moved their corporate offices out of Wisconsin.
I don't know if they're still union, -but- they've had a less-than-stellar relationship with the union in the past. Oh, and I eat everything as long as it's locally produced, free-range, grass-fed, organic, etc. My eggs come from my parents hobby farm, for example. As for beer, I used to drink Leinenkugels, but they were swallowed up by the Miller abomination. Now I drink Point. |
I am vegan edge, and I'm glad to see the veg kids come out in numbers...didn't expect that. I'm impressed. I do inhale a bug every now and again, it sucks...no beer, but the one time I did drink (when I was 17) i think it was schlitz or something else ****ty...it just gave me a headache and that was it...that sucked hard...

i stopped drinking 2 years ago, i've been vegan for a year and a half, and i've been riding fixed for a year. since i've been vegan i've noticed an incredible change in my health and fitness. after a big vegan meal i don't feel gross and weighed down like i would after an omnivorous meal. i'm vegan for myself, the environment, and the other creatures that inhabit this earth.

I started converting to veggieness maybe 7 months ago, haven't eaten any meat for about 4 months. I eat too much cheese to give up dairy for right now. I haven't had any problems at all, but along the lines of what absntr said, I sometimes miss sushi and other delicious Japanese food. |
Been vegan for 8 years. To me it's just one link in the whole world-consciousness thing, which includes both reducing impact on the earth and treating our animal friends with respect. The current trend of factory farms is detrimental in so many ways.
I've noticed that activists of all sorts seem to focus too much on their one cause, and don't take into consideration the interrelation of all things. Choosing to bicycle and living a veg*n lifestyle are just two conscious choices that are very close in value. Riding fixed has a simple, spiritual essence involved with it that also parallels the choice of eating lentil burgers and vegan general tso's. I don't know about other parts of the country, but here in Portland the fixed-vegan-PBR thing is becoming more style than substance. All the hip spots have vegan food now, and more PBR flows through here than the Willamette river. Veganism seems to just be a tool for many hipsters to boost their self worth over all the micro brew swilling, cheese eating, derailleur-pedaling "yuppies". But I'm not complaining- it's a good thing to see since if they have to follow a trend then these at least are beneficial choices to make. Bicycling and veganism |

And on the topic of beer: I mean PBR is good and all that, but I'll take a Yard's over it any day. Or a fancy Belgium if I'm feeling rich. |
i was veg for 6 years. i thought the meat craving would go away. it didn't. i fought it for 6 years.. then realized something... bacon taste good. pork chops taste good.

Bacon might as well be a vegetable anyways
