Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

It seems like we can't. Or we all need to renounce fixed gear bikes and repent on the altar of geared road bike superiority.

I wonder whether or not SS bikes are just a fad, too?

Bikes: ones with two wheels

this was entertaining. I like the comment about fixed gears not being well suited for an urban environment. In my opinion thats the rider not the bicycle that is not suited for an urban environment.

ypsetihw is almost correct. He correctly identified fixed gear bikes as a fashion trend. People riding fixed gear bikes are trend following hipsters. Simple fact. They'll dump their bikes and jump on the next bandwagon as soon as it comes along because their need to "Belong" will drive them to it.

What he got wrong is the roadie part. Roadies aren't "real bicyclists" either. Roadies are technology trend following elitist snobs who are trying to win the competition of showing off "I have the deepest pockets". They don't really like bikes or riding bikes. They just have a need to compete and are desperate to appear "Better than". 50 gears is never enough because that's how they live their lives, excess is never enough. It's just a random coincidence that they have chosen bicycles as a medium to express themselves.

**The REAL bicyclist rides a single speed coaster brake bike. It's the only true and correct type of bike.

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? There are three and they are vastly different. A cantilever, a straight bar, and double triangles. Hell, they even have two different sized wheels and five different colors because I love variety.

**Glad to see someone with a sense of humor.

The UCI should adopt the old soviet way. Two models of bike that never change, so if you want to go faster then better train more. That should cut out all the dentist bikery immediately.
