Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Terror's influence in SF Washington Square

Yesterday (Sunday, May 22), my wife and I were in North Beach with a friend who is a Russian Orthodox monk. We had decided to take him to lunch and then a stroll in the park. Mind you, he truly is leading a "monkish" lifestyle. So when the following occurred, he was, shall we say, a bit astounded.

Coming through the center of the park was a pack of about 20 cyclists, the majority male, all of them in their underwear. The odd thing to me is that none were on fixies, so I really have no idea if this is should be attributed to Terror in Pink or not. There were even a few women in underwear.

Sorry to say, the majority were also your typical human, a bit out of shape, pasty skin, sad looking undies, you get the drift. It was not a pretty sight actually, but I wouldn't have missed it for the world just to see my friend's reaction.

In any event, if someone knows the why of all of the above, it would be appreciated.

It's called Critical Ass. It happens in SF/NYC once in awhile. There is also a weekend naked ride through Golden Gate Park.
