I have toes strap/foot retention pedal but its pieces of garbage that came with bike, so I decided to swap it with Catalyst Flat Pedal and its work both, I never experiences any "foot slipping" if you meant that ;)

I mash at low cadence and spin at high cadence.

Always have; always will.

A bit of both but I do put on a bigger gear for group rides with geared bikes as I am more likely to get dropped from being spun out on the faster sections.

Mash and grind that chain to oblivion! Since most of my riding is for sanity's sake, I do enjoy a good stress relieving grind--my gearing is set a bit higher than most for this reason.
