"Semi-horizontal" drop outs?
Specifically the Crosscheck frame: Surly claims this can be built up as a FG/SS, but is there enough adjustment to do so? I welcome any input on this. Thanks.

Sweet, thanks.
Anything good or bad to say about this particular frame? Looks like a nice all-around frame by what I can see by the specs.

I love mine, but... I despise the cantilever brakes. I'm about to completely replace my brakes and drivetrain, and if I'd been thinking when I ordered parts I would've gone with linear pull brakes (v brakes) instead. If this frame had mounts for discs it would be perfect.

That's confusing, calling those dropouts "semi-horizontal". Those are standard old-fashioned dropouts that have been called "horizontal" since vertical dropouts came out, oh say 30+ years ago. True "horizontal" dropouts aren't actually horizontal; closer to perpendicular to the seatstay so moving the rear wheel (to adjust chain slack or position the FW in relation to the rear derailleur) doesn't affect the brake pad contact area on the rim.
Yes, track ends ARE horizontal and horizontal road dropout are not. But they also have different names and serve different functions there is little confusion.

Drivetrain?
Old
9sp DA bar-end shifters
9sp cassette (11-27)
105 5700 derailleurs
Andel crankset
Salsa 50/34 rings
(Yes, the much vaunted "Salsa Shimandel Ace" grouppo)
New
105 5800 everything, with 53/39 and 11-32.
Brakes are being upgraded from crappy, worn out Tektro Oryx to (hopefully) better quality Shimano units, it says BR-CX50 on the box.
I'm also replacing the black bars, stem, spacers, saddlepole, and brake cable hanger with polished silver (Alu.) units. Should be proper shiny when I'm done.

People who are un able to adjust cantilever brakes , often like mini V brakes ..
Single speed ? If you use a Half Link you can get closer ..

Keep at It, steve, I built my own frame in 1975, and put Mafac Cantilever brakes on, The first adjustment I Made ,
was Where I brazed on the Brake Bosses..
I discovered in the 80s working on Mountain bikes with Japanese made cantilever brakes,
that added a rim to pad height match & toe-in adjustment of some sort, was, they let the frame companies loosen the 'good enough' allowance
of where the Brake Bosses were attached to the frame.
That added adjustment added another Thing to cope with..

Fine, I'm just incompetent. My advice still stands, just say no to cantilevers.
(mine used to be quiet until I "upgraded" to Koolstop pads. *squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...*

Canti's are great. Nothing against Shimano's V-Brakes or other similar linear pull brakes but I like canti's at least for FG/SS when I want a flip-hub for a gear-ed bike disc brakes are awesome.

Adjusting brakes is the same as truing a wheel. Once you get it, its kinda fun. But until then... genuine pain in the ass....
