Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

seeing these pics, hearing the general enjoyment of the riders who got to take over the road for a short while -- it makes me think of that line from fight club --

In the world I see...you'll climb the wrist-thick cuts of vines that wrap the Sears Tower. When you look down you'll see tiny figures pounding corn. Laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lanes on some abandoned superhighway.

I think this one is just an awesome photo. Congratulations.

I never got to do BTD while I lived in Chicagoland, but one year during the Boulevard Lakefront Tour they closed one lane of LSD so we could ride on it (I think the path was under construction or something).

great pictures. From the light I'm guessing you started early and headed south.

I've also heard the terms "East Pilsen" and "White Pilsen" used to describe this area. I used to live on Ashland and 19th above the Lavanderia. Last year I was paying $500 for 1BR 700SF but the building was crappy, but had great light. I moved up to Lincoln Square and am suffering culture shock with all the lawns and mature trees (and baby strollers!)

I also did BTD, and had a great time. My new cousin in law was this bearded french guy (if anyone happend to see him) that taped his camera to his helmet, and set it to snap pics every 30 seconds. I'll post em when I get em.

I thought there were too many bike snobs screaming at inexperienced riders. I saw this lady yelling at this 12 year old girl. Give it a rest! CBF did a bad job in telling people where to pass, and so the left lane was clogged with people.

Also I thought there were too many weekend warrior types racing around. When there is a city sanctioned 20,000 person ride, it's probably not the best idea to race through. I'm all for racing around, but it's just not safe when there are families riding too. I saw one really bad accident going south where the guy was picked up by the ambulance. His frame was all jacked up, and he was stretchered off.

Those roadies were annoying. Yelling "On the Left" or whatever & pushing familes & little kids out of the ways. Where's the fun?

They're old too to be acting like jerks. Do they think they're gonna be on some fancy racing team being 40 years old & all?! Riding faster ain't gonna turn back the clock.

I get so confused when people bring back year old threads.

I was in Chicago for BTD but didn't see any of you. I rode my dad's sweet 30 year old Frejus road bike (My bikes were here in Detroit). My dad rode a tandem with my mom.

Why start a new thread, when you can bring back and old one?

I've always wanted to do this ride, but wondered if I'd be welcome. I ride a road bike and don't usually ride my bike at less than 10mph. Based on the pictures it appears this is more of a family style event with slow riders everywhere. I'm not saying I'd want to get a pace line going and push it to 20+, but I'm wondering if I'd be dodging kids all day.

thoughts?

I've done the Chicago L.A.T.E. Ride a couple of times and from the BTD pics, it looks pretty similar. 10 mph is a reasonable pace once you get past any bigger crowds of riders.
