Is there a crankset which will give more chainstay clearance than Dura Ace?
A 48 tooth ring is close to the chainstay but the crank spider touches just barely. I need a few millimeters more clearance. Omnium perhaps? That would be best because I prefer black but will take what I can get. -Tim- |
Your fancy new custom track frame won't clear a very common track crankset because the chainstay isn't dimpled? That seems like an expensive problem.

And Omniums have beefy spider arms, so I wouldn't expect that to be any better.

take a ball peen hammer and smack the shet out of the chainstay until your cranks clear. its steel. its fine.

since that dura ace bb is octalink you cant just find another bb spindle thats slightly longer and swap it out. because octalink is trash.
but you can do that with square taper campy. because square taper is all thats needed on a trackbike. |

So I need some advice on replacing my bike that was totaled bc I'm terrified I'm going to hate what I get. I know this isn't technically SS/FG but this is the forum I frequent and trust the other members here. I went to my LBS today to have a look around and see what they recommend, because I said I built my old bike for touring the person helping me started pulling Marin and Kona touring bikes. I've narrowed it down to a 2018 Marin four corners or a 2018 Kona Rove AL. I hate aluminum but the Kona Rove seems to be my top option for value for money. The Marin is nice and also steel which is a bonus, but it's very modern and in a horrible blue colour. should I take the plunge and get a "gravel bike"?
My second choice is an older Fairdale weekender they have in the showroom, again horrible colour but i think i'd like the more "city" oriented bike that I could build to be more of a stylish tourer and it's steel with canti breaks instead of disk. obviously a downgrade from the entry level gravel bikes I mentioned above. My third option is should I buy vintage used and most likely get everything I'm looking for in a bike but sacrifice having a modern bike. I guess my questions are, are modern gravel bikes good enough for me to sacrifice my aesthetic wants? is a modern steel city bike a better option than building my own from a higher end vintage frame? will I get more value out of modern bike versus a mid range vintage roadbike or sport tourer? |
What is your budget and what look are you going for? and I’m not 100% sure but I think the answers are Yes to all of your questions. If if you want steel, check out the All city Gorilla Monsoon. Just released it’s a steel cross and touring monster. Alternatively check out the Jamis Renegade lineup. |

For being like 20 years old the bearings still feel perfect. The hub itself is an interesting design. Big ol' bearings, pre-load nuts are "secured" by an internal O-rings that grip the threads (it feels like you're cross-threading it), the silver end caps are secured with O-rings gripping the inside of the axle. That's all there is to it. When funds allow it'll be part of a second set 'cross wheels because why not.

I thought I saw you mention a Jamis Renegade and that would be an excellent choice assuming you went for a steel version. The Expat would be a fine option in the lower price point but the Escapade would be my top choice and considering you are getting a nicer frame and Ultegra for only 2700 it is a pretty good option.

Thinking of switching out my Soma HWY1 drops for a shallow riser bar but need some help. My quill stem is a 26 clamp, and I'm looking for basically a straight across bar with no sweep back. Does such a thing exist? Must be silver.

Lots of guys were riding Jamis at the Southern Cross gravel race. I saw at least three Expats.
I would have bought a Renegade Elite if it came with Di2. Jamis seems to have an amazing parts mix for the money. Lots of value across all their product lines. -Tim- |

I actually ended up buying the Fairdale bc I just didnt need something so serious. In the future I might get more of an actual serious gravel bike if I find I need something different. I could also put drop bars on the fairdale later on and do a double or triple chain ring in the front and do disk brakes. It just seemed like a no brainer to get something a little more quirky and cute that satisfied my aesthetic needs a bit and also had room to upgrade in the future. Thanks for all your advice tho even if i took none of it lol
