Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Dirty Kanza Fixed

Thought some of you might find this interesting.

JOM from Gravel Cyclists interviewed Corey Hilliard, Brooklyn bike messenger and 2015 FG CX World Champ just prior to riding Dirty Kanza fixed.

Please let me know if you guys find any other links to information about this guy or his ride.

Rereading the comments and I'm not sure that the rest of the riders were happy with his behavior on the course.

He claims to have brakes but others claimed he was descending unclipped and yelling "No brakes!"

Hope this isn't true as it makes it harder for the rest of us to be accepted as legitimate.

Descending unclipped yelling no brakes is probably the worst thing you could do at a race. It's not a Mafacrama or MASH video or the popular documentary Premium Rush or riding reckless in NYC it is a bike ride with other people. It is cute the number of people who think "I never need a brake for any reason at any time and people should just get out of my way because I am so cool" but sadly cute doesn't work. At least he has a front brake on the bike but from the sounds of the video he doesn't use it much and it is more a cute item for show.

I would like to continue cycling and especially fixed gear cycling well into my "golden" years whatever the heck those are. (for me golden years were when I didn't have to adult and I could do stupid things and be ok)

At my end I take it that fixed gears can't coast on downhills and still have to pedal. Anybody that can do that on a 200 mile gravel ride race is bad ass. Anybody that does this and unclips and says no brakes is a joke to all the hard working fixed crazy gears out there which I don't happen to be one.

It was probably the best documentary that has ever come out. Ken Burns shat himself when he first saw it and almost swore off doing documentaries after that ; )

For realz though... just got a DVD on the 2016 RAAM. Pretty hardcore stuff. I have a pile of cycling DVD's and this is one of the better ones.

RAAM is pretty crazy but Trans America seems like a tougher one as you are doing the same thing unsupported. Plus Rob English's bike is so trick.

I saw a movie on the Trans America once but I can't remember how many hrs a day they ride. The solo riders ride around 20-22 hrs. a day and some average 400 miles a day on the bike for the first couple of days. I have no idea how they do it as I did it as a 4 man team in 2006.

I think this may have been the newer RAAM doc.... but didn't a rider go over a thousand miles before he stopped to sleep? That's straight up beast mode right there...
