BadAssBiker 06-03-05 09:15 PM

going in reverse screws up my spelling, too. ;)

Terror_in_pink 06-03-05 09:33 PM

i had a dream that i was able to to do large backwards circles and that i got better and the circles became smaller and smaller. then i woke up.

fixedfiend 06-03-05 09:41 PM

yes, i'm still trying to learn that going backwards and then popping the front around 180 like i used to on the 20". really hard on a track bike though...

jrowe 06-03-05 09:44 PM

A two-foot bunny hop would be more useful. Learn to do that.

r-dub 06-03-05 09:46 PM

for backwards circles, best is to start by becoming a great trackstander, then get used to 'goofy-foot' trackstands (just turn your hbars the other way) and from there it's not too hard to start going backwards.

r-dub 06-03-05 09:49 PM

not really a trick, but something fun and entertaining for the masses that I did today way to make a kangaroo fixed gear. If you don't plan on getting anywhere very fast and don't plan any hard banking and have too many bikes I highly recommend this...especially for riding drunk.

I think he meant to avoid crashes on the track.

jrowe 06-03-05 11:26 PM

I could think of many things--sprawled riders among them--that I could clear with a 2' bunny hop. The question that should have been asked, "Riding forwards gets me everywhere I need to go. Why backwards?", does not have an obvious answer.

fixedstep 06-03-05 11:33 PM

i've noticed that is has helped me develop a smoother rotation pedaling for forwards too, espeicially when i'm not looking at the wheels but looking backwards or just around makes me feel the bike.

true but if all the old schoolers of BMX were content with this question, everyone would still only be racing on the track. Think about the progression of BMX street/dirt/ramp riding in the last 25 years and it started with someone wanting to roll backwards.

Like I said, no obvious answer. Other than fun. And that's not a bad reason at all. That's why I ride.

Perhaps. I'm thinking of that video someone posted a couple of weeks ago with the insane BMX stunts. If we have curiousity about backwards riding to thank for stuff like that, then maybe I should learn it, too. That video left me speechless. Literally. I didn't post a comment because I just didn't know what to say.

i must digress. riding backwards takes some balancing skills. someone that can ride straight back has better balancing skills than someone who can't whether they are rolling forward, backwards or standing still.

fixedstep 06-03-05 11:46 PM

that sounds cool. but i also think it is cooler on track bikes because the geometry isn't designed for those type of manuvers so they are more challenging. plus where i practice in san francisco at this little skating area, all the hot girls walk by and look.

Think: a tight alley or passageway and suddenly a vicious dog appears. No space or time to turn around so one must scramble backwards as fast as possible. ;)

jrowe 06-03-05 11:53 PM

Jump over the dog. Hot girls will find it much more impressive. Oh, wait, evidently all of the hot girls are walking by the skating area watching fixedstep.

fixedstep 06-03-05 11:54 PM

well i just figure when no one else is there, and then when i look back at them, and jumping over a dog would be cool

r-dub 06-04-05 12:44 AM

just imagine all those girls watching you jump over the dog BACKWARDS!!!

r-dub 06-04-05 12:44 AM

...in a circle...

williamw 06-04-05 01:00 AM

...with no hands and one foot on the front wheel...

wouldn't the tight geometry of a trackbike make it more suitable for things like this? i know when i first got my track bike it felt so much easier to ride backwards than on my conversion. i might have just been imagining it though..

phidauex 06-04-05 08:38 AM

If you could execute that dog leaping maneuver you would totally get laid by one of those alledged hot chicks. I suggest you begin practicing immediately.

As to the question, "Why ride backwards?" I must reply, "Why do anything at all? Because its fun!"

peace,
sam
