In other news, former elite Gravel dude Ashton Lambie just set the WORLD RECORD in the 4k IP in Aguascalientes, Mexico at the Pan Am games. He rode the 4k in 4:07 which is SMOKIN' fast...For those of us not so metrically inclined, that's thirty-six MPH for four minutes. Bravo!

That's pretty nuts when you consider the 1km world record is a little under a minute (0:56).

No coincidence that he started on gravel.

Gravel enforces rule number 5.

Very interesting fixed gear gravel grinding.I have a co-worker who does this.I thought maybe he had a few screws loose when he told me how he rides s/s off road.I honestly could not wrap my head around it until i read this thread.Another bike to build in the near future. Thanks everyone for the food for thought.

How do you cope riding hills SS on gravel?
I have done a fair bit of fixed gear road riding and usually stand for steeper hills but on gravel that usually leads to traction issues.
I can keep my weight back more while standing but it doesn't seem as natural or comfortable.

I know it is uber limiting but I am debating adding new tires and give it a try.
I take my Bianchi San Jose with Gatorskins tires anywhere I want. Gravel roads, cotton fields, dirt track, etc. Sometimes a good shortcut is to carry the bike over a barbed wire fence to get from the cotton field to a soybeans field that'll get me to another road.

Tire clearance is the key and while you can ride 23c tires on gravel, it ain't no fun so get a frame that can handle at least a 38c tire.

Ashton has ridden a lot of gravel, but I think his first race was a local crit. He crushed the field and was immediately upgraded to Cat 4. I think he was 17 years old.
