I was repacking a hub, cause I dunked it in turpentine overnight (to dissolve red loctite). then I proceeded to over tighten the stupid thing - and it's a cheap, unsealed quando to begin with - so now there's a terrible rough spot in the spin. Is that something I can ride out or is it a good excuse to upgrade?

Take it apart again. Clean, inspect, then re-pack the bearings. Check to make sure the axle is not bent by rolling it across a flat surface.

thanks newguy, I checked to see if the axle was straight. then I've been trying to ride it out to see if I can smooth out the tight spot. the spot is still there, and the hub makes the bike vibrate at certain points. looks like I'll be degreasing to get a better look tonight. thanks for the suggestion.

if you over tightened the cones, you could've damaged the race or cone. if you take a pencil and run it along the race and cones where the bearing ride you can feel any pits that you may not be seeing with your eye. or you might've flatted some bearings. did you rebuild this with new bearings? cheap hubs have cheap bearings. if your cones and races are ok, try upgrading to high quality grade 25 chromium bearings.

You said it was a Quando? Basically anything you buy would be an upgrade, so I say go for it

i second on the upgrade...my pos quandos just died on me...no surprisingly, its been hanging by a thread for a while now. I upgraded to a set of IROs and they are sweet!

wang, how long did you have your quandos for? I just got the bike, like, 3 weeks ago — lesson learned, I guess. do you think it would work if I just take out the bearings altogether? (^_^)

anyone how much does relacing costs on average? now I got 2 wheels to get made.

relacing costs nothing... you use the spokes that are already laced, it's beautiful!
if you want to learn to build a wheel, and you should, pick up the basic wheel building guide by Jobst Brandt, it is VERY simple and nice for beginners... just make sure the hub flange is about the same size or you may need to actually buy shorter/longer spokes...
