50/16, 50/18 but personally I think I would be better off with a 50/17 with a 50/20 for those occasional 35+mph headwinds here in Chicago

mascher 07-06-05 01:14 PM

53/20 for now, waiting on an 18, since it's all downhill in Mtl. Except when you're on your way home, so we'll see about that.

45x17 for the big hills around my neighborhood, 52x17/15 for racing and riding around downtown where its flat

evanyc 07-06-05 01:25 PM

52x16 right now and switching to 48x16 soon.

46x16 -- the gear of pie!

colinm 07-06-05 01:31 PM

42*16 cuz I'm a slacker.

48x18 which seems to be my perfect gear even though it's just what came on the bike i bought.

(not a regular skidder, and my taste in tyres is too pricey anyway.)

someday i might graduate to a 17, and put a 19 on the b-side for hilly days after we move to pdx.

I use 48x16 with a 14 on the flipside which I rarely use. I find it gives me a good balance of speed and spin without making hills too difficult.

52 x 18 accelerate's like a motha...

I'm not full of sh*t when I say I run 28/18. It is true. 40.4 gear inches. Yes, I spin like a crazy mofo and go down the hills nice and slow. Very good workout for the legs on the downhills. I hate letting it go.

Reasoning: this is my winter commuter comfort bike with butterfly bars. The 40.4 inches will be great for snow. This is also the bike I want to use for offroading (once my rib heals)

I'm converting another bike to 40/16 (67 gear inches) as my buddy is sort of tired of going 20 km/h on his fixie (he's got 75 gear inches.. LOL.. dunno what teeth that translates to.)

46x16

44x17 for around town on the fixie. Will probably switch up to a 46 or 48 on the front soon. My SS MTB is 32x16.

phidauex 07-07-05 09:49 AM

52x19 for me, about 72 gear inches. I like it on the flats, but I rode to work the other day (my first commute on the fixie), which is almost all up hill, and my legs decided we'd be dropping to a 52x20, or 50x19, whichever I buy first, which will bring me down to about 68 gear inches.

peace,
sam

46 x 16. I've had it past 34 mph on a downhill. Thought I was gonna die! That's something like 145-150 rpm.
