What ratios you runnin'?

I recently changed the ratio on my bianchi pista from the stock 48-16 to a 48-13. Its a nice stroke on the ego to push a pretty monster gear. But then again, its reasonbly flat here in central illinois, and a "hill" is about 50 feet.

Just outta curiousity, what kinda ratios your running, forget all the fancy calcs...teeth is all i'm curious about.

Also I'm thinking about a 18t for when i go back to school in southern illinois for the hill climbing (real hills there) should I get a freewheel for decents or just unclip the eggbeaters and go it comando *i havn't had any trouble re entering my pedals and i have a frnt brake
any advice is welcome

Spin that sh*t on the downs. That's as much of a workout as all the rest of it. Coasting is for roadies.

Side question: You ever ride with Mike Magnuson? just curious.

48-13: that's a big ass gear. ~52-14

For flat ground that seems OK though.

yeah quite big. we have a park in down that is a 2 mile circut, nice play to babewatch and beef up...every lap there is about a...30 seond climb or so...which i manage fine, but 10+ laps i start to slow up a little and turn that gear at about 20 rpms nothing but pain there...wouldn't have it any other way...i've had my fixie for about 2 weeks now...and i get it now...i'm hooked. btw my flip flop has a 16 on the other side still...my emergency gear.

I'm planning on doing the Tour De Corn, in chattam illinois...metric century...i think i'm gunna run my 48 13...we'll see half way through won't we...

vivophobic 07-06-05 05:23 AM

one bike is 48/17 the other is 47/17...im thinking about going 52/17 or so with the first one...time will tell

crust & crumb 07-06-05 05:35 AM

42 x 15

regardless of which direction i may be traveling in, a moderately fierce headwind always seems to accompany me there.

i'm on a plain. i can't complain.

[edit] i should note that while this is my spinning gear, i just usually end up having to mash through it (given the aforementioned conditions). [/edit]

pedex 07-06-05 07:02 AM

52/17 or 52/16 fixed, 50/16 singlespeed

Aeroplane 07-06-05 07:37 AM

48:16 - big enough so I don't spin myself crazy, small enough that I can still make it up moderate hills. And no skipping or skidding for me yet.

wangster 07-06-05 08:01 AM

46:14 to big for my skinny a$$ but till I get new wheels, I have to deal with it. Good training though.

Surferbruce 07-06-05 08:21 AM

44x16.

mcatano 07-06-05 09:00 AM

52x18 (78") on one, 42x15 (75.6") on the other. I think I was running 42x18 (63") or 40x18 (60") in the winter muck.

skitbraviking 07-06-05 09:22 AM

44 x 15 on the street but thinking of pumping it up for the track

mob 07-06-05 09:28 AM

46x17. good sized gear for all occasions. uphill, downhill, speed, slow, stopping, starting, skidding, skipping... oh ya, and if you skid, it has a lot of skid patches (17) because of the even front and uneven back gear.

drac_vamp 07-06-05 09:31 AM

50 x 16 fixed on one bike, 48 x 16 fixed on the other bike.

12XU 07-06-05 09:36 AM

pedex, you are awesome.

48x16 here, soon to be 48x15 to maximize skid spots.

ch0mb0 07-06-05 09:44 AM

50x17 today, always keeping it in the mid-range for the streets...will probably switch it up for them PPark laps soon tho.

i'm in the same area and run 48x18/17. 48x13 is pretty steep, thats got be hard getting going from a stop. how fast are you going? unless you're consistently over 30 mph, 48-13 seems like too much. i'm usually going 20-25 around town, and 48/18 is perfect.

same time 07-06-05 09:58 AM

42 x 15 for me, too.

deadly downtube 07-06-05 10:04 AM

50x15 until my 44 comes in the mail lol

jim-bob 07-06-05 10:26 AM

38x15x26".

dolface 07-06-05 10:50 AM

46x16 in sf.

Plow Boy 07-06-05 10:52 AM

46x18 for cruising around the back fourty, 46x16 for the group rides with all of the hills included.
