Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? From NYBMA site:

Messengers down in NYC

A day after the end of CMWC, Spencer Morris, one of our housing coordinators and a great friend to all of us, was struck by a car on West 3rd & Mercer, sustaining several fractures to the skull.

He has awoken from his coma, but his head injuries are severe, and he will be in the hospital at St. Vincent's for some time. His condition is stabilized, but he is not accepting visitors into his room.

The family is at the hospital with him and you can come there to give them your support. Spencer is a fantastic person, a good friend, and we all hope he pulls out of this quickly.

There is a fund for him at Trackstar - 34 E. 1st. St at 2nd Avenue.

I hate to continue the bad news, since CMWC NYC was an undenialbly great time, but there's a messenger from Los Angeles in one of our hospitals too.

Oswaldo "Ozzy" Lopez was hit in Brooklyn after the final party at The Hook, and has suffered several broken bones. He is at Belleview, and his recovery will doubtlessly be a long one.

If anyone knows of a fund set up for him, email me at (ken@studionumbernine.net), and I will publicize it here.

Our profession is a dangerous one, and bicycle racing in all of its forms has a great risk of personal injury. There were several accidents during our races which sent people to the hospital.

They all came out fine, but Spencer and Ozzy are in much more serious condition.

Since their accidents happened after CMWC, they are not covered by our insurance policy. Please do what you can to help these guys out.

Now might be a great time to donate to the Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund as well.

And again, I remind you to ride safe and please wear your helmets.

Track Star is also taking for Ozzy in a combined fund for him and Spencer.

Yeahyeah I'm not that dense. But if tragedy isn't an excuse to make a not-really-funny joke, I don't know what is.

I am not saying you are dense but for us guys putting together this CMWC we been up for days with little or no sleep, then this happens.

We thought it was over and was going to have a good time but it was not to be.

If you know how bad the guys are then you will see why now I an take a little joke.
