Gear acceptance
I've been here a long time. Most of my "friends" are in this forum, aside from those heathens that have been bad...good riddance. (kidding since I know you suckers are still reading this) I find that I am spending most of my time geared lately but not in spandies. Can I still be in here? I even took the good 531 frame and rebuilt it with an old 600 group for drunk nights in the hills. The fixed stuff is on a rarley used Lotus...I will eventually build up a trackie but right now I'm upgrading my road bike to full Dura-Ace. So can I still be here? I promise not to put Jem (the cartoon) cards in my spokes.
|
i think you need a stylish hat, and some spoke cards. then you can be here.
|
I could figure out a way to thread a white vinyl studded belt in my spokes!
|
That'd only work if you had the teal leggings to go with it
|
do u have a giant messenger bag that's bigger than your body?
|
Sadly it's a Chrome Citizen...I feel like a puny, puny man.
|
there is something to learn from every type of bike... that is unless you are some whiney cry baby fixster that needs to draw a line in the sand and advertise you're clearly on the "it's hip to be anti-hip" side. oh wait...
|
just wrap your bike in ugly-ass electric tape and bizzare stickers for shell oil and npr and puma. messengers do that, and if messengers do it, it belongs in the fixed forum
|
Last week I was fixing up the roomie's MTB, so I took it for some test rides. It was funny getting sneers from some of the elitist dorks on conversions and chrome pistas who just days before were all knowing nods and smiles as I passed on the Gios. Guess it's the ride not the rider, huh? F*ckin' idiots.
P.S. Nothing against conversions and chrome pistas, just some people riding conversions and chrome pistas like they invented the darn things. |
this is what I've been riding with a seperated shoulder as of late. the trackie is collecting dust right now.

OOOOH! Ksyrium SL's and Dura-ace 10's! And I thought I was a geek going to d-a 9's and Ksyrium Elites. Well at least mine is steel.
|
Blingtastic litespeed! Looks like fun. :)
In thirty years I'll buy it from you, and make it a fixie, k? ;) peace, sam |

I would love for this to turn into a what geared bikes to most of us ride thread.
In response to the original post...I would say go ahead and wear some spandex. You will probably be happier in the end. |

This is my flashy vintage(ish) ride. Muy fun, if a wee bit small for me. I need to get a longer stem as sometimes my knees smack the drops, even when seated. (Thanks to 2manybikes for the tires and Nashbar for the NOS Cinelli splash tape that I picked up just the week before on a lark.) Tange #2, Shimano 105 w/ indexing on the rear. 12 blazing speeds.
Oh, and that is Biopace. *****es. |
Trevor - I have a 130mm nice Cinelli quill you can have if you want it.
|
For serious? I'll trade you for the zipcar stuff. :) I've got a 105mm Cinelli 1A that I'd be happy to trade, if you're interested. I'm thinking I'm not gonna do BNB tonight, so if you'll be at tonight's ride we could even do any appropriate swapping then. I should be there.
|
Hmmmm. I'll take the 105, it's a lot closer to a usable length for me.
This is what it would look like in it's packaging, that I don't have. It's only got a few scratches on it at worst, nothing major. http://www.vwcy.com/cinelli2.jpg I'm thinking I might make it out tonight, but I'm not totally sure. |
I'll accept you, geared brethren.
I just build a surly pacer with downtube shifters, campy drivetrain, and ritchey pro "other stuff". I ride it more than my fix now - trying to get my distance up and branch out to different types of riding. Plus I decided to stop being a dolt and start caring about my knees (was getting some problems). The thing I miss most is trackstanding. :'( |
Yeah, that's the 1A (you can even see it on the left side of the blister pack--the XA is the version with the plastic badge on the front of the stem). Cool, I'll toss it in the bag just in case.

I got her so I could ride out to walden pond and the cape, etc. since I moved down south, she's all I've been riding. I have to say its been a welcome relief on my weak knees (car accident 3 years ago broke bones in both knees). I'm at the point where I'm nervous to get back on the fixed, I've gotten so comfortable with gears. |
Aegis Aro Svelte. Finest frame i've ever had the pleasure of riding, but I'm considering selling the frame and converting to either a True Temper Platinum OX or Reynolds 853 frame, as I love my steel fix so much...

holy crap :D
Fugazi Dave just might like that one I like all things bike. If you've ridden them in the past, you still have some love for em. p.s. slvoid is probably browsing this thread and not piping up, but I know he secretly wants to come over to the dark side! |
i have a dark purple pinarello with the all black 105 group which is currently out of commission due to a thrashed rear wheel (gonna work on that next week). and a blue trek 600 series with moustache bars, 8sp bar end shifters, old cook bros 22-32-42 triple, and an 11-32 9sp cassette. it's my second favorite bike right now (first fav being my pin.). i also just put the gears back on my trials/MTB. it still has the slicks, but that'll change soon enough.
i like gears. a lot. |
I like gears.
I like most bikes. |

This thread is too funny. Here's a bike I just built.
I still have the IRO and like it much better since I replaced the B123s for flipped n' chopped bullhorns. |
No digi pics, but I've been tooling 'round on a 1987 Masi Nuova Strada (I do love the Masis...) with full dura ace kit (except the headset, because the campy version was better in 1987 according the the guy I bought it from for WAY too little money a couple months back.)
|
hello, employee discount? yeah, i ride this on sunny days with decent miles involved (35+)... so sweet.
