Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? And now for my next trick...

For my next trick i will be turning a '86 Schwinn World Sport frame into a Fixed Gear Urban Assault vehicle. i know i'm gonna be riding this thing as my work horse around town bike but would maybe like to take it to the local velo for a little flat out fun. any advice on a good rim/tire set up as well and a good set of cranks that'll get me enough clearance to ride street as well as track. also, if anyone has turned a World Sport fixed, i'd like to know what size BB works best for chainring clearance and a straight chainline. the last bike i built up took me 3 times to get the right BB size for clearance so i figured i'd inquire before trying.

any opinions or general guidance would be much appreciated

did you get that off ebay? i think i saw it...

if i had a velo around (which i don't) i'd probably just have 2 crank rings, a smaller one for commuting but switch out to the larger one for racing, sure it's a bit of work, but 10 minutes max... but that's just me, i don't like pushing a huge gear around town...

either way nice snag and good luck!

yeah... i saw it on ebay the other night and couldn't let it get away(sorry to all those whom i beat to the punch). way too good of a deal. anyway. i have no problem switching rings out. i'm not too informed on track configs but aren't there removable rings on track bikes. i'm not wanting to go just track.. the rings thing was just something i threw out there. i'm gonna have to get some tires on it to find out what kind of BB ground clearance i'm gonna have. that may limit what kind of rings and cranks i can use.
