Today in Walmart single speed freewheel feels like 30+lbs; cheap beater bike.

It looks like they rebranded but it is a cheeeeeeeeeap bike in every sense of the word except price. Way too expensive for how low quality it is. Maybe they charge what metal scrap is going for but wally-mart is not a place for bikes unless you are beyond desperate and have knowledge and tools to fix it and build it up properly and even then it is just simply not worth it. They could make a low cost single speed that is decent-ish but they would have to get people actually assembling them and tuning them properly and they would cost more but wouldn't have to be super expensive but would be a good replacement for most everything they sell. Simple quality easy to repair without as much need for it.

Or just sell Buffalo bikes and make it a corporate faux "we care" stunt where for each one they sell two (or more) go to an under developed country. Would be great PR for them and since Buffalo does actual good work it would actually do something good.

I've seen quite a few of these around. With a complete overhaul, I don't think they'd be terrible. They'd probably last long enough to offset $75 of bus fare.

The biggest impediment if you actually intended to own and use it would be the constant maintenance of the wheel bearings, bottom bracket and the immediate replacement of the brakes made of stamped American Cheese.

I'd get one for a rides downtown or a stadium event. If it offsets the cost of parking 2x then you are money ahead.

Pragmatically: At the very least, it does have tubes, tires, brake pads...All consumable stuff that'd set you back more if purchased separately for other bikes.

I'd ride one to the store and not have to worry about leaving it unattended outside while I shopped

Ah yes... Thrusters Revenge. They're hiten steel. Single speeds are more trust worthy than almost any geared walmart bike. But most of it depends on who built them. Like about all walmart bikes, the wheels are the highest risk. I'd certainly build one of those up. I almost got a Thruster out a dumpster once, but somebody beat me to it. Wheels, bottom brakets, and brake calipers can always be swapped out, and is pretty much all there is to those bikes.

As others have pointed out: cheap, non-durable, heavy and quickly(-est) put together by techs of unknown (but cheapest paid) skillsets.

Steer clear.

While browsing larger BMX cruisers I've seen these on Walmart, online only. I keep checking. If the price ever gets a rollback I just may order one just for kicks.
