I once had a cop jump out of his cruiser and scream 'stop the car'! I tried so hard not to laugh. He was really pi$$ed after that.
Arlington cop, btw.

That's pretty harsh. And they really do write these tickets?

I meant to say running a red light. I'm pretty sure it was $190. I'm taking that one to court.

Bicycle - fail to exercise due care when passing 14(1) $85.00 sounds pretty subjective
Bicycle - fail to ride in single file 14(2) $85.00 Does this mean that in the absence of a bike lane that cyclists can't take up a lane?
Bicycle - unable to keep both hands on handlebars 15(2) $85.00 how do they determine unable? what if you just don't want to?
No bell (horn) - bicycle 75(5) $90.00 I still don't understand why people who aren't mute are REQUIRED to have a bell or horn

darkmother 08-12-05 01:58 PM

Huh, weird. The site you referance claims $90. I'll check my ticket when I get home, it was definately more than that.

darkmother 08-12-05 02:01 PM

This site says $155...but that doesn't sound right either

ever think about trying to change these draconian laws?

i sit on a committee that makes policy recommendations for bike-related laws in dc. our recent conquests include getting rid of the law that requires brakes, and moving toward getting rid of our stupid mandatory registration (that's mostly a pretext to harass people).

i lie to policemen. it almost always works. i am not that clever. they are that careless. reference my R1 story.

What mandatory registration law********** You've got to kidding. I remember they tried that just when I was leaving NYC.

BTW: there is this photo speed trap on Mcarther Blvd. There is just the slightest down hill and ther is plenty of run up. From watching cars, the trap is set at 30 mph (25 limit). been thinking about getting that ticket...will have to wear a sign on my back with my address and carry something that will trigger the radar. Any suggestions?

griffin_ 08-12-05 11:55 PM

not a whole $5!!!!!!!
i'm worried really worried about a bui! (biking under the influence)

lilHinault 08-13-05 01:15 AM

Man only $5? The bike ticket I got was $20 and that was years ago, it's probably more now, like 2X as much. The offense: Riding a bike on the sidewalk in Newport Beach right under (a) the gaze of a cop and (b) a "NO BICYCLES" sign.

Bicycle - unable to keep both hands on handlebars 15(2) $85.00

Fail to signal for tum 142(1) $90.00
Fail to signal lane change 141(2) $90.00
Fail to signal stop 141(8) $90.00

looks like you can't really win, can you? how do they expect you to signal your stop and keep both hands on the bars?

Somewhere in storage at my parents' house is a speeding ticket made out to Eddy Merckx.

LóFarkas 08-13-05 02:32 AM

How the hell are you supposed to signal a stop anyway??? Put your hand above your head?

r-dub 08-13-05 02:36 AM

As I was riding home from work tonight I ran a red light. It's in traffic, but it makes sense to run (for the east bay, ca, usa folks it's where southbound telegraph is joined by shattuck at 45th). I saw that there was no traffic crossing (there rarely is) and if I waited I'd have to fight against lots of traffic merging in from my right at 40mph. As soon as I went through, a cop on a motorcycle lanesplitted the same traffic and pulled through the intersection, I was preparing my story (see above) when she pulled up beside me, said "nice bike", and took off, lights blazing...

Last I checked, it's pretty hard to maneuver a Crown Vic down a flight of stairs or over sidewalks or through gates or other obstacles. Learn from the BMXers, it's not hard to get away on a bike. And last I checked you're not going to get shot at for running a red light.

And this isn't 1948, cops use 9mm now. :D

Last I knew it wasn't hard to ditch the cops while driving a 6 cyl s-10 :D ...
I am the guy you will never see on "wildest police chases" as I have 4 succesful evations under my belt.

I would think on a bike it would be even simpler as there are no license plates

Unfortunately, I'm not skilled enough on a fixed gear for those kinds of shenanigans. I sometimes worry about what would happen if I were forced to try and bunny-hop a curb in an emergency or something. I don't think I could do it, at speed, on a fixie.

That's one thing I haven't practiced. Maybe 'cause I'm a lot less likely to wreck my wheels (or my face) practicing trackstands and backwards circles than I am hopping curbs ;).

Hmm, I guess I better watch stuff a little closer in Cambridge, I run a lot of reds in front of cops and many haven't made a move. Myself and a few other riders actually blew by a cop going full bore through a red during that 7-11 race. Have they been stopping people recently?

jacobs 08-13-05 01:00 PM

They'll most certainly stop you in Cambridge. They love to sit at Inman St/Mass Ave. and Brookline St./Mass Ave in Central. At night they'll hit you with $50 if you don't have a solid light on the front and blinky on the back. They used to send you a light for that $50, but now they just keep the money.

Evaded many times on a BMX bike, not counting fat guys with tin badges when I go looking for ledges and embankments in commercial districts. Never been caught (knock on wood), most chases end as soon it gets too confusing and dangerous to follow in a car. Mostly get rolled up on poaching local skateparks since bikes are verboten pretty much everywhere around here. Remember when it was skaters who were the outlaws? :(

Never been chased on the road bike or the fixie, but the rules of the game are the same. Double back, look for narrow spaces, crowds, stopped traffic, parks, bike paths...all the places a squad car can't or won't follow.
