Great tips man thanks. I was feeling the call of euro bike wanderlust as well, perhaps during the spring.

Agreed, thanks to everyone for the tips. The more I read about Western Europe, the more I think this is where this'll take me. Lots of time to plan, orient, research, etc during the cold winter months, which is exactly what I need.
With a bit of luck, maybe some of us can meet up for a Chimay.
Does anyone have any experience boxing up and checking their bikes as luggage? I found a couple of things online...I guess my biggest question is whether there's a way to check the boxes at the airport for re-boxing on the way home.

Best box would be a hard case like trico, followed by combining and altering 2 boxes manufacturers ship in (ie make it reinforced/uncrushable). IF there's a left luggage at the airport, it would probably get pricey after a short while. Best option would be to see if you can't leave it at your first hotel/hostel/pension, next option would be to give it away then build up a new one for your return.

You can buy a pass for all the international trains which will take you as far East as Hungary and Romania, as far South as Spain and Italy and as far north as Norway, offering unlimited trips for 25% of regular fare as well as some trips free. Google Eurail and Europass. Netherlands, Denmark (make sure you visit Christania in Copenhagen) and Germany and Austria are most bike friendly countries in Europe. How about Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse https://www.pbase.com/wojtek_burkot/austria fixed next summer?
