Messengersploitation
Dunno if anyone's seen this. On the corner of Varick and Dominick Streets in Tribeca, there's an enormous billboard for Coors Light featuring a very happy, hip-looking, (white) bike messenger scraping the the ice from a giant coor's logo.
Don't think I've ever seen a messenger drink a coor's...

... the f**k does it matter that he's white?
Ad people have been exploiting anything resembling counter-culture since ... what was it, the dawn of time?
Edit: I just checked out that Ad-Rants site ... they rip into the authenticity of the shot because the guy's got "fingerless gloves" and a "goofy helmet" on? Come on. The rest of it's obvious, he's too clean (and clean-cut), but whoever wrote that rant is just as ignorant as the person that came up with the ad.

I just think people are jumping the gun talking about the messengers or track bikes becoming trendy. Look at other subcultures that have ben hijacked - first some independent movie gains popularity, then a crappy hollywood movie is made, then there's a toy in every kid's meal, then it's the new brand identity for 5 cable networks...
It ain't there yet - don't sweat it.

also, i mentioned that the model in the ad is white because, even though most messengers (in nyc at least) are black, the advertising community nevers seems interested in co-opting their identity...

I like that no one has mentioned the flaw in this rant based around the fact that the messenger in question is running two brakes. We all do realize that not all messengers ride fixed...right?

There are quite a number of gold panners if you count the serious ones and the hobbyists too, you see, anywhere in the western half of the country, you can pretty much find gold. Not a lot, not absolutely everywhere, but it's there. Some people apparently find quite a bit. But most are hobbyists, and like golf or any hobby they can be numerous and hardcore about their hobby. And ..... well, it's kind of natural to pee in a stream right?
