wheel build strong enough?
I know there is some info on this topic floating around here, but its easier to just ask. I recently purchased a set of Phil SLR single fixed hubs, and went to the LBS to have them built up. I asked for 3x drive/1x non-drive and 2x on the front.
So, today I got a first look at the rear wheel, and on the rear he laced the drive side 2x and the non-drive radial. I really can't afford to break a wheel and replace it. Will this lacing pattern be strong enough? Also, on top of that I asked the spokes be DT revolutions, but at first glance they appeared to be DT champions. Should I ask the owner about this? Thanks guys and gals. |
how much do you weigh?
|
even if it will be ok, you should get what you asked for.
|
if you didn't get what you asked for, go back and get it fixed. If you paid for revs and only got champions, he took you for about $.75-1 per spoke. Champs are straight gauge. Comps are butted. Revs have super thin butted sections.
how many holes and how heavy are you? is this a street or track-only wheel? Personally I wouldn't expect a 2x/radial rear to stand up to the riding I do. Then again, I wouldn't build a rear wheel with Revs either. |
that's total crap, did you get that done in columbus? i'd be furious.
|
im about 155-160. they'll be street use mostly. also, my mistake, they appeared to be competitions not champions.
they were built in columbus at baer wheels, and i really like Dave there, so id hate so make him rebuild them. |
also both wheels are 32
|
Like him or not, if he's cool, he'll appreciate you coming back to let him fix his mistake instead of just bad-mouthing him to the rest of the town. Do the stand-up thing and let him know that he may have eff'ed up.
|
if its not what you want you'll regret it later
|
i dont mind the lacing pattern and i dont mind the cheaper spokes.
just as long as the wheel will be as strong as what i had wanted, it doesnt bust up the Phil hubs, and i get some sort of refund on differnt spokes. i really would like to avoid having the wheels rebuilt, since i just got the frame today and don't really want to wait another week to ride the damned thing. |
why did you pick Revs?
I thought they were a front-wheel-for-light-riders-on-race-wheels-only-or-at-least-not-on-the-drive-side type of spoke. maybe he did you a favor. |
maybe he did do me a favor, but i feel like he shouldve told me that when i put in the order. is that too much to ask? not to bash, but i did give him the hubs around the end of may, so i think he wasn't rushed to get these done.
|
huh, huh, different spokes.
|
don't get me wrong. I'm agreeing with you.
sounds like he f'd up. maybe he forgot what you asked for in the last 5 months? go talk to him |
ok so my real question is... is the radial non-drive lacing ok for hard street riding, not rough riding, but i like to sprint and ride hard.
|
5 months for a wheel build???
|
i told him it was no rush, i just got the frame today. but still, no excuse to not do what i asked.

I'm surprised that the shop even took the hubs/etc. in for the build. Things get lost, people forget, you could move away, etc.
|
how dare i move away and forget a pair of Phil hubs. thats grounds for a beating.
plus it was just a wheel build, and when i said take your time, i was thinking maybe 4 weeks time. |
Pick up a caliper and measure the spokes. If the mid-section is 2mm, they're champions, if it's 1,8, then competitions and 1,5 is revo. If I asked for revo's and got champions, I'd have the guy rebuild the wheel(s). Maybe have the front rebuilt and get refund for the rear.
BTW, I think I'll have revo's in my next rear wheel. In a symmetrical 3x lacing, they should hold up. |
in fact, i borrowed the caliper from work, just for that porpose.

What would a dolphin know about builiding wheels?

I raced/rode mtn @ 175 lbs. on a 2X drive side / radial non-drive for 2 years with few issues. You should be fine with 3X/1X.
