Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: Late 80's Pinarello Treviso Track w/ campy pista record

Tour de Bronx

Anyone in NYC planning on doing this? I went for the past 2 years and it was a blast... Its a perfect chance to get out and ride a part of the city you usually wouldn't go to with about 5,000+ people. Pretty diverse course w/ some decent hills thrown in. Anyone interested? I'm looking at all you thursday night Prospect Park Guys...

I'm there. I'll be on a mtb with a triple....no more fixies or SS for my old knees, alas.

Everyone has great things to say after riding this one, so the more the merrier.

Bikes: Too many 80s roadbikes!

I'm not riding fixie, but will be riding from the Riverdale start, and (I expect) riding up to the start from Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, if anyone wants to join up!

Bikes: Cannondale R500

There are lots of starting areas. It's easy to get there on Metro North or the #4 (from the City). I'll be there, from the Botanic Garden end. City Island will be fun to see with a thousand cyclists zooming around! I'm a new rider so I'll need all 27 gears on my Cannondale to get me around...

So let's see, a 2+ hour drive, wind, cold and a scenic ghetto ride?
Sleep and booze are looking really good!

Great ride! a little cold in the morning, but the rain held off and the sun came out later on... This years mandatory checkpoints were pretty lame though

It was a great ride, and I didn't see much in the way of ghetto but rather lots of great bike paths, some wonderful views over the Long Island Sound, and some nice buildings where once there was urban blight. It wasn't the best organized ride (the rest stops -- esp the first -- were lame) but I had a good time. Will prob do it again next year, then head for the booze and sleep...

Yeah...the enforced rest stop (the first one) was a bit of a pain, but it was the only real letdown (well, the couple of times the ride crossed its own path were a little confusing, but that was resolved quickl enough). Even so, there wasn't much of a problem being bogged down by traffic or by big groups of slower riders -- we had a speedy little group on track bikes together for most of the latter half of the day, and generally had a blast. One of the most enjoyable big-organized-thousands-of-people rides through the city I've been on; I'd definitely recommend next year's to anybody who passed on it this time around.
