Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

learned my lesson the hard way.

first off let me say OOOOOOOUUUUUUUUCCCCCHHHHHH

well today i was riding over to my girlfriends house when i noticed that i thought

my chain was loose so i decided while moving that i would bend over and check.

BAD MOVE! not only did my chain come off but i ripped my finger all open and ****

and nearly broke my chain tensioner(don't know how) my finger is all messed up

but luckly i didn't get hit while crossing stanyan with no brakes, my chain off

and a bloody painful hand.

so the moral of the story is dont touch your chain while moving.

Wow. Sounds extremely painful. They must have forgotten to put the warning label on your bike about not attempting to repair the chain while riding in traffic...but, really I hope you are okay. Did you have to get stitches?

I thought that if your chain is tight -it will surely sever your finger if your finger gets caught between cog/chainring and chain...you both severed your finger didn't you..come on, we won't laugh

nope! mine left cog tooth holes right down the middle of the finger and took a chunk of nail. Doc said no stitches. lotsa fun that was, him scrubbing out the wounds with some sort of tooth brush device.

This is why toilet brushes have warnings not to use for dental hygiene and table saws have warnings not to place fingers in blades when blades are in motion.

Bikes: A couple customs and some beaters.

I've nearly done this twice. Thank god I was spinning the cranks suuuuuper slow and the teeth hit my nail rather than my flesh.

why the hell are you all putting your hands near your drive train while it's moving?

reminds me of shop teachers... if they were good with their hands they'd be making custom furniture for the wealthy, instead of missing fingers and yelling at kids all day...

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

It's good that this comes up every few months. We need more threads with the danger of touching your chain while it's moving.

But BlueBrew - what could you have possibly thought that you could do while riding? If you want to check your chain tension, try trackstanding next time. It's much more accurate, and a lot less deadly.

Damn Trevor. You're much more hardcore than I could hope to be. I mean, my first impulse would not be to grab the digital camera and document everything. Do you still have that fingertip in a jar somewhere?
