specifying all-american components

I would like to build up a track bike using all state-side components.

so far I got:
bottom bracket — phil
headset — king
hubs — phil
seatpost — thomson (maybe)
spokes — is wheelsmith american? I don't mind DT.
stem — thomson (maybe)

but now I'm stuck. anyone know of good american components to complete this build?

drac_vamp 10-19-05 06:02 PM

american classic makes nice hubs and seatpost.. other stuff too perhaps?

hyperRevue 10-19-05 06:05 PM

what frame are you using?

dolface 10-19-05 06:07 PM

do they have to be manufactured in the states?

treechunk 10-19-05 06:08 PM

boone Ti stuff. Jonnycycles stem. Jeff Jones bars.
Where is Paul stuff made?
How's 'bout White Industries?

steaktaco 10-19-05 06:09 PM

eh... custom. I've got 'til july to spec the build, but i want answers NOW.

I dunno.
the idea is I can't go all italian cause the frame will be made locally, nor can I go njs. so might as well go mismatched american.

see if Boone can make you a set of their old Twisted cranks. That **** would be DOPE AS ****!

who's making your frame?

drac_vamp 10-19-05 06:15 PM

do you need to go all anything? why not the mismatch parts and build the bicycle that has the best parts regardless of nation of origin? no need to be ameri-centric! a little bit of mavic here, some campagnolo there, some dura ace under there, and phils in front and back and you've got yourself a totally globe-trotting supermachine.

I think it's cool. I think having a cohesive thought behind a bike rocks, basically whatever it is.

actually adidas, nike, and puma are (or were) german. so mismatching them would be like me mismatching phils with kings and thomsons.

but slops I get watcha sayin' — just nitpicking. would be nice to have an all phil (or something) bike.

bostontrevor 10-19-05 07:56 PM

Nike is American, Portland, OR to be exact. Always has been. FWIW.

curlybro 10-19-05 08:02 PM

Bowerman and his crazy waffle iron.

ok I stand corrected.

sloppy robot 10-19-05 08:30 PM

and puma and adidas were two brothers that hated each other..didnt talk for years and years.. so its a little different then phil and thompson

Thor29 10-19-05 08:31 PM

But nothing with the Nike label is actually made in America. They have little girls in Cambodia who make their stuff for 40 cents a day.

I'm guessing that DT spokes are made in Switzerland, since the full name is DT Swiss.

A lot of American companies have their stuff made overseas, so it is pretty tricky trying to sort that out. One slimey trick is to have a sticker that says "designed in the USA" (like Marin bicycles). I love my Steamroller but that baby was made in Taiwan.

Make sure you get a custom Timbuk 2 bag, then you'll know it was made in ******* and not some asian sweatshop

already have one

jet sanchEz 10-19-05 09:23 PM

Why does it have to be all-American? Is it a sponsership thing?

operator 10-19-05 09:37 PM

No because it's for "cool" people.

r-dub 10-19-05 10:47 PM

A subletter at my shop has an all northern california bike...Mikkelson frame with king/paul/phil/a few others parts, and some specially fabricated for him. Mainly because he could...local economies are nice.

Why are you hesitant about the thompson stem and post?

You'll never find a chain that's made in the US, probably can't find tubes and tires either.
