specifying all-american components
I would like to build up a track bike using all state-side components.
so far I got: bottom bracket — phil headset — king hubs — phil seatpost — thomson (maybe) spokes — is wheelsmith american? I don't mind DT. stem — thomson (maybe) but now I'm stuck. anyone know of good american components to complete this build? |
american classic makes nice hubs and seatpost.. other stuff too perhaps?
|
what frame are you using?
|
do they have to be manufactured in the states?
|
boone Ti stuff. Jonnycycles stem. Jeff Jones bars.
Where is Paul stuff made? How's 'bout White Industries? |
eh... custom. I've got 'til july to spec the build, but i want answers NOW.

the idea is I can't go all italian cause the frame will be made locally, nor can I go njs. so might as well go mismatched american. |

do you need to go all anything? why not the mismatch parts and build the bicycle that has the best parts regardless of nation of origin? no need to be ameri-centric! a little bit of mavic here, some campagnolo there, some dura ace under there, and phils in front and back and you've got yourself a totally globe-trotting supermachine.

I think it's cool. I think having a cohesive thought behind a bike rocks, basically whatever it is. |
some people just dont like to wear nikes with an adidas sweatsuit.... nothing wrong with that..i built mine all italian.. it just feels right

but slops I get watcha sayin' — just nitpicking. would be nice to have an all phil (or something) bike. |
Nike is American, Portland, OR to be exact. Always has been. FWIW.
|
Bowerman and his crazy waffle iron.

and puma and adidas were two brothers that hated each other..didnt talk for years and years.. so its a little different then phil and thompson
|
But nothing with the Nike label is actually made in America. They have little girls in Cambodia who make their stuff for 40 cents a day.
I'm guessing that DT spokes are made in Switzerland, since the full name is DT Swiss. A lot of American companies have their stuff made overseas, so it is pretty tricky trying to sort that out. One slimey trick is to have a sticker that says "designed in the USA" (like Marin bicycles). I love my Steamroller but that baby was made in Taiwan. |
Make sure you get a custom Timbuk 2 bag, then you'll know it was made in ******* and not some asian sweatshop

Why does it have to be all-American? Is it a sponsership thing?
|
No because it's for "cool" people.
|
A subletter at my shop has an all northern california bike...Mikkelson frame with king/paul/phil/a few others parts, and some specially fabricated for him. Mainly because he could...local economies are nice.

You'll never find a chain that's made in the US, probably can't find tubes and tires either.
|
why don't you start machining your own parts, then it'll be truely local and made in the usa. Slap your own logos on there and some made in usa stickers. Hey you can have a custom bike from top to bottom. That'd be a pretty awsome project, probably expensive though.

i commend you on your american made attempts.
what are you doing for a frame? treechunk, paul stuff is made in chico, ca. white industries stuff is made here. they make those eno single speed cranks... the have cogs in the works as well, but there are also the phil cogs. does anyone know if woodman components are made here? most of their stuff is expensive enough for me to think so. soma frames are made here; does anyone know if their handle bars, etc. are made here? i know some reynolds stuff is made here and some easton? |
I think Woodman is British if I'm not mistaken.
C - you keeping the builder a secret? And mr. steaktaco just ordered a Bailey so that's covered. ;) |
Woodman stuff is from Taiwan. The newer American Classic stuff comes from there also.
You're also gonna run into problems with chain, tubes, tires, saddle and pedals. I think you might have to bend your own bars. SunRims makes alot (but not all) of their rims in Warsaw, IN. DT Swiss has a factory in the US to better serve their US customers. Wheelsmith is an American company. |
