I really dig franks on Grand just because the place is waaaaaaayyy old school. The price on labor is fantastic too as you can generally get anything done for just a couple of bucks if you don't have the specialty tools yourself. You can get a wheel built for next to nothing, the inventory of weird and bastard parts is immense, and they can even do a little welding.
Frank himself is a super nice guy that likes to sit around and shoot the sh1t and talk bikes . The selection isn't super high end or blingtastic, but it's respectable.

yeah, like I said, NYCvelo ain't the cheapest, but anyone who spends a friday night until 9 working on a hub that came with a wrong part he had to swap out for me on the spot. Plus Laekhouse sells through them, and ethan's got some nice gear as well.

Time's Up has been building up the bike tool supplies and been getting almost respectable if you need to fix something yourself with a little help on tues and thursday nights. Today we got the dropout alignment tools and got a decent park tools truing set up. I'll say something to Austin about a wheel building clinic. I can even throw in a nashbar hubset I picked up when they were cheap. Remember, Time's Up is all volunteer so it's a rag tag operation.

do you guys have a proper headset press and fork crown race installer?

i got a king really inexpensively for my new frame and don't want to risk screwing up the cups or the FCR by using ill-fitted bushings on a homemade press or some PVC to knock the FCR into place.

I went there on your recommendation and had a good experience. I had the cranks on my old Raleigh swapped there for a very good price, including BB and labor. Real friendly guys and always very helpfull.

I'm gonna say no on both of these after a google search. We did just get the park tools cup removal tool, if that helps at all.

I listed Times-up! a page ago.

The space is moving away from a ragtag setup toward a pretty comprehensive shop. I'm bringin' up a new park repair stand from TN along with a few boxes of nice DB DT and wheelsmith spokes that someone can hopefully use for a pair of hi-flange hubs. There is finally a TS-1 truing stand (word!) so all the eyeballing and guesswork will be taken out of wheelbuilding/truing.
We currently don't have a headset press and the crown race drift is MIA.

The inventory of used bike parts is pretty comprehensive and open to anyone that needs them to keep their bikes on the road. That said, consider the task of keeping a place like Times-Up! running in a city like New York and please donate accordingly.

on the topic of headset presses, i know this is kind of anti-LBS in spirit, but this thing works perfectly well, and is REAL cheap:

https://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?s...8&srccode=1067

And the old U-shaped crown race removers aren't very pricey to begin with.

Your King headsets may require extra tools to install. As well as a decent press you may also need something like this:
https://www.webcyclery.com/product.ph...cat=383&page=1

Chris King has excellent tech info on their website so you can check what they recommend depending on the headset.

most decent presses have enough steps in the drifts that installing a king isn't a problem. Despite the price, it's still just a headset.

wow. good call. i guess i could use those adapters on a homebrew press, but then i also guess it would cost 30 bucks at most to install a headset in a new frame at a LBS.

that said, now i'm thinking that i'll let someone else drop in the headset and then i'll pick up from there.

thanks guys.

for 30 bucks you should just buy the Nashbar press, which has stepped drifts that will fit the King headset.
King has a bit of a racket when it comes to their accessories. According to them, to install their headset "right" *requires* a proper facing job, the proper extra adapter drifts, and a sprinkling of pixie dust in order to release all the magical qualities of their components.
Really, it's just a set of cups and bearings.I've installed dozens of them over the years and there is nothing special about a King that warrants extra work or worry.
If you're going to spend 30 dollars for someone to press those into your frame then you're insane. Go to Franks or Bikeworks and they'll do it for under ten, and they won't take a week to get around to doing it.

How bout which nyc bike shop is best for buying road bikes?
I went to 'bicycle station' on vanderbilt and when I told them my situation they recommended the 2006 BIANCHI FORZA for $850 or the 06 BIANCHI BRAVA for somn like $650.
When I asked them why BIANCHI and no other brands… they said because it is somn like the oldest road bike company, they are purists, etc.
They said first I ORDER it then they would fit me… (they do not have many in stock bikes)

Is bicycle station charging me too much for the above bikes?
heading to nycelo , trackstar, bike works now... wish me luck

For a road bike, I'd easily say Toga over the rest. They sponsor a team and have a sick selection of bikes. The vast majority of their business is geared roadie gear.

not really. not a lot of stores sell old quality frames. stores seem to specialize in either new stuff or beaters.

busy bee on 6th btwn 1st and A may is one of the few to fall in the middle. they carry beaters and fixed conversions of middle-of-the-road bikes, but emey the owner knows his stuff, and gets decent race irons in too.

go see him

Cool, yeah I've peeked in there, looks like a cool shop. I do a gig right down the street from there every couple weeks, maybe I'll pop my head in next time.
