Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? gear ratio for distributed rear tire wear

how does it work?

you want the combination of your front chainring and back cog teeth to be odd?

or something like that?

Here's how to do the math in your head:

Divide ring teeth by cog teeth. i.e, for a 52x16, 52/16.

This result is the number of times the wheel rotates for each revolution of the pedals.

Take the remainder (52/16 = 3 r 4, remember long division?) and divide that into the cog teeth. 16/4 = 4. 52x16 gives you 4 skid patches.

48x16 gives you no remainder, there is just one skid patch.

If you can skid with either foot as dominant, your number of skid patches doubles.
