Old Men 1% London ride

So we had the drunk ride, then we had the 1% ride, now it's time for the Old Man Ride. It will still be 1% to the core and we will probably still get drunk. The difference is that we will do it in Old Men's clothing.

The idea is based on a tweed jacket that ImOnCrank got at the cycle jumble. Salmonchild was quick to chip in with a riding suit. Techone and I have to raid charity shops. I think Techone is looking for a top hat and Chris Eubank cane - time will tell if he succeeds.

So anyone who wants to cane it around London in stupid clothes is welcome to join in.

The two big questions - when and where? I am busy the next two weekends (and think Jack is too) so was thinking the weekend of 12/13 could be good. What does everyone think? I have no idea about where - not Central or Brixton I guess.

Also does anyone wanna go for a weekday evening ride before that?

I'm game for the 12th (assuming that you don't mind having a fat kid who can only just keep up.)

Weekday ride: It's Critical Mass on Friday. Come and see the violence inherent in the system!

Heheh... I was thinking more along the lines of the pic of Michael Carroll in today's Sun!
(if i can get my scanner working, I'll post it up)

Fat kid that can only just keep up is more than welcome! Given the dress, and the fact I may have a Chris Eubank cane, I doubt we'll be going fast! Hell, I might even rig up my bike with some old lady shopper bars!

Oxfam, don't fail me now!

you think terrorising people on the streets of londonis a good idea? i'll show you, one whack with my trusty stick and you won't know what hit you!

is it wrong to already have stuff like this before the ride was planned?

oh and i'm down for cm this evening, seems some high up police chief is trying to shut down the mass saying that as a demonstration it cannot pass by wesminster without permission and that the route has to be declared well in advance...

I'd do it if it weren't for this rather substantial body of water in the way. I wouldn't even need to change my clothes.

I've been out scouting charity shops, but haven't found anything old manish enough yet. 12/13th would be fine with me.

BTW Anyone going to Rollapoolza IV tonight? The London Bike Messenger fund raiser? Very curious to enter the roller race just to see how how bloody unfit I am.

Hope CM was good - I had to go to a wedding in Bournemouth. I can now say that Bournemouth out of season is a scary, scary place.

Hope everyone's charity shopping is going well. I have high hopes for my local Oxfam coming through with a tailcoat or something.

Salmonchild - it isn't wrong that you had the clothes already, but the face you're pulling means the ride should be a blast.

Do we have a time or place for this ride? Is it happening? Just want to ensure that I don't double book myself as normal.

I can do either sat or sun right now.

I can do both, but looks like mr tom is good for the 12th. Doing it on the 12th means I will be less hungover after my mate's birthday on Sat night.

Starting around 10 or 11 and riding for a few hours sound good?

12th sounds good to me, but then i'm always down for a ride.

how about we end the ride at the bramah tea museum down by london bridge? seems like a fitting (and non-alcoholic) beverage for the old gent....

i like the themed idea and have even woken from dreams laughing at the image of a few people bombing round tweeded up. photos are a must!

Not having any luck with a coat, but have trousers and a trilby!

Maybe we could meet at Herne Hill at 10, do a few laps then off terrorizing old ladies and children!

Who's actually planning this out? Oliver? John? Jack?

a very cool hat can be tweed or (most popular) felt.

btw on cm i met another jack (american stud over here studying for a while with fixie in tow, but not called jack and not as lairy) thought i nearly had another member for the posse (should that be ***** now with this 1% thing? someone has to explain that- we don't all have to become pot bellied leather wearing thugs now do we? or do we.... maybe a theme for the next ride. if your gonna wear the tag why not wear the rags?)

Personally, I still think of you lot more as 7%ers. You know, as in 'Sherlock Holmes and the 7% solution'.

Old fashioned track racing sounds like fun - only thing is Thurs, Fri and Sat all have some rainy symbols on BBC, so the track might be closed again. I can go have a quick look on Sat morning maybe.

We could do a Greenwich/East London ride and then finish at the tea museum (which sounds ace). That would mean that Oliver is king of planning for this trip. Otherwise I could try and plan out something from Herne Hill that heads out to the wilds of the East with input from those brave enough to live there.

Salmonchild - I might want to borrow one of your jackets. Whichever one has longer sleeves. At the moment I am hoping to rock the shirt, waistcoat and cap look so will let you know how my waistcoat hunting goes.

I think the 1% thing is more about outlaw attitude than the rags. It's a way of life not a fashion thing. But a Hell's Angels theme ride would be ****ing funny.

I am totally in accordance with the tea suggestion. Tea doubleplusgood.

Edit: And there's a truly exceptional pie and mash shop at Greenwich. Pie!

I honestly can't remember what's next door, but they did /fantastic/ pies. The liquor was rank, but then it usually is.

Got my old man costume sorted - go random charity shops!

Anyone still looking for stuff - there is a charity shop on corner of wilton road and warwick way near victoria that has a great selection of old man stuff (eg top hats) and a half price sale on clothing.

Pies in Greenwich sound like they will hit the spot. Or pork pies in the park.

sorry about the lack of communication. i've been looking at my a-z for a route, **** thing is that the places are cool but the inbetween raods are pretty boring (might be cos i ride them everyday though).

herne hill sounds good, but where from there, i have to admit to not feeling too fit at the moment- virus and legs taking long to recover from commute rides- so are there any objections to a train from herne to l bridge? and or a pretty slow cruise round town... not snail paced but nothing that will make me feel like dying the next morning.

provisional route is north of river going east towards isle of dogs, some tooling around near canary wharf (bringing camera), then down the dogs to the foot link to greenwich(should give some good shots in the tunnel) cane it up the hill in g park to one of the best views in london next to general wolf esq. then either onto a microbrewery in blackheath or back to gwich and along the south side to l bridge. ammendments suggestions welcome...
