Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Okay, I feel a little weird asking this . . . but is there anyone in Los Angeles/ Orange County that would be kind enough as to allow Me to *test* ride their fixed bike? (Preferably in a frame my size ~60; I'm 6'2.5")

Thanks
If you're down in Costa Mesa/Santa Ana area, let me know. I have a 58 cm frame that I just built up. I have a 60 cm frame that I just trashed the fork on - you can have it if you want to find a fork.

I love my fixed gear "conversion."

Every time it starts to rain I convert it back to freewheeling 27 speed and re-install the brakes and carbon levers and stuff. But then I decide it's too nice a bike to get wet and I take my Expedition to work.

Then I get home from work and check this forum and I'm all like "oooh, fixed gear is so cool" and I take all the shifters off again and relace my rims to the track hub.

But by that time it's dark outside and, really, who'd ride a fixed gear bike in the dark? It's dangerous. So I climb into my spandex skinsuit and check out the weather on the 10:00 news. And if it looks like it's gonna rain I grab the hex wrenches and start converting back to geared, just to be safe.

That's 500 miles for those of you that are lucky enough not to be Canadian.
Oh, stop it! I kid! I kid the Canadian!

Two reasons:

1) Coasting makes you grumpy
2) and in honor of our old forum friend Torrin, "it makes you a better lover"

Torrin, if you're out there, hope all is well. The forums' thoughts are with you, and as WK's sig line reminds, we haven't forgotten ya.

For simplicity: both for the brain and the bike.

For strength. I was ripping people's legs off in races this year, after commuting fixed most days, about 30 miles.

Fixed-geared bikes are so silent...the spin is so smooth...and the control is just divine.

The real fun is kicking roadie butt on the climbs
and passing them as they struggle up on a triple.

I'm building up my winter commuting bike as a fixed because I'll have more control over it than if I was riding a road bike.

And because I have a strange obsession with using my dremel tool to cut parts of my bike. To remove the kickstand or not, that's the question?
