I've considered how tacky and obnoxious this may be...and I've decided not to let the potential awesomeness go to waste. (I'm from a city where people hook their Dodge Minivans up with 10" spinners...if my bike had windows to tint and a mirror to hang a rosary or fuzzy dice from, I'd be all over it.) So, how would I go about getting a small, cheap, waterproof boombox secured on a front or rear bike rack, but not to the bike itself? I'm not against drilling holes in things, but I'm not really sure of the logistics of this. Thoughts? Other ideas?

yeah, just get a rack for the front... bungee cords.... boombox... done. gotta be a tape player, though, since CD's would skip.

make yourself a 'boompack'; get an old backpack, put boombox inside, cut out big hole for speaker. I don't know. But Boompack is SO taking off...

If you wanna go all out you can put car stereo components in a box that fits on a Burley or Bob trailer. You see many of these on RAGBRAI...nice and loud for group rides! Some can even be solar powered.

But then what hand would I air-drum with?

I haven't decided which bike I'm gonna do this on yet (probably both). Bling blang.

its probably better if its removable, wouldn't you want bump the tunes when you are off the bike too? besides, if you lock up the bike and leave the stereo tunin' out you might attract unwanted dancing and stuff when you are in the grocery then you gotta deal with a party at your bike at all times. probably not the best idea.

they totally still make tapedeck boomboxes, on the cheap too. any variety/drug store would have them for like $25. target, walmart, big places. you'd totally score if you got detachable speakers too, run the cable so you got one up front and one in back...

a friend of mine made an oldschool briefcase into a boombox using cheapo radio shack car components. $10 speaker, $20 tape deck, and some sort of battery/power source. pretty awesome portable-party-unit.

A full-time party at your bike could be awesome! Kinda like those coffee drink commercials except good.

And a gumby haircut, a jumpsuit, and a bumch of gold chains. Make sure that your boombox is bumpin' Steady B or Kool Moe Dee, perhaps LL Cool J.

Not nearly as cool as the guys at Rainbow Jersey, here in Milwaukee, who hooked up a blender to the back of their bike, powered by the rear wheel. Margaritas on the go!

You need to have a metal cage that goes around the boombox with a locking lid...If you want, I'll design the cage and send you a drawing, you'll just need to find a local fabricator to weld one up for you.

It'd probably cost a few bucks, but then you can have it welded to a bike rack, totally secure and pimp-tastic!

Dude. It would rock. A little lock on top, you could even go ALL out and have the cage powder coated in some color to match your ride.

Okay, I was thinking about the briefcase idea, and I was like--why not take that a step further? I want to build my own speaker (the way they do on Pimp My Ride) that's breifcase shaped, with maybe one or two midrange speakers on both sides and a subwoofer in front...and a rechargable battery and 3.5mm jack for convenience. The back panel would be on hinges, and I'd hook a lock up to it/the rack somehow. I want something I can take inside and use for other stuff.

pimp my bike?

i wanted to put a boombox inside an old army ammo case and put speakers on each end. likewise, you could get a small battery powered amp, drill speakers holes and just have a 1/8 input bumping tunes.


You could always go this route.


Or get MTV Europe to pimp your bike for their show.

You could probably go so far as to get a small set of powered speakers like you might use for your home studio (bookshelf) and run them off of a sealed lead acid battery, like for a camping lantern. All you'd need after that is a mini headphone pre-amp to plug your iPod shuffle into and you are so effin' ready for the ladies.

I second the notion that you should be bumpin' Kool Moe Dee or some Curtis Blow if you want to make the whole thing work.

On second thought, you'll definitely get your ass kicked just for your ride. Maybe you should just stick to the boom-box and duct tape idea.
