skidding issue.

I rode my bike for months before and never learned to skid.. I was off my bike for a while and took it out today now that I have read how properly skid and I started getting it imediately. The issue i am having though is a couple times when I locked my leg and lift my front pedal it felt like my cranks were moving and the wheel wasnt. It actually felt like I stripped the spindle and the crank arm was moving around it. But when I got home and checked everything, the cranks were straight and tightened, my cog seemed to be tightened fine. I dont know what's wrong and couldnt figure it out by investigating myself. I then started to think that maybe this was just the feeling when the wheel goes a bit backwards perhaps? Anyone have any clue what I'm talking about or experienced the same thing?

yeah, maybe its a bit of a hop, vertically, where there is no wheel to ground contact that makes this feeling. if all things checked out tight and fine and straight, it could be that.

or, the usual suggestion of chainring bolts coming slightly loose.
and the tightening of the lock ring always comes up too in questions like this.

Yea, it may be the wheel coming off the ground too much perhaps.. I need to get it down better. And I dont think it's the chainring bolts because it moved too far. It almost felt like the teeth on the chainring were worn down and the chain like slipped around it, not with it. I'll check the lock ring. I'm getting new wheels, cog, and lockring next week so it should eliminate any issue if it has to do with the wheel. Thanks for the response.

sometimes during the initial pull of the skid the rear wheel moves backwards a bit due to the rider overestimating the force needed to stop the rotation of the wheel. that could well be it

That seems likely. I have more getting used to it. I am also running 48-16 now and will be running 48-18 next week, so it will be easier to skid and skip.. so that will help me get it down good.

yeah I usually always have that happen when I'm doing a skid/skip to stop, I end up moving the wheel backwards a little bit. It slows me down even quicker. at least it feels that way.

The cog moved on the threads. Sure of it. Rotafix the living pi** out of the cog (grease the threads first) and then tihghten the lockring until you break your $10 nashbar lockring tool. Then finish it with channellock pliers and go buy a real lockring tool. Oh, blue loctite on the lockring please. Do it before you permanently damage either the cog or lockring threads.

Bikes: KHS touring thing that's old, French? fixxie, 69 schwinn stingray show bike.

unless yer running a crappy hub there is NO REASON to use loctite. if anything it's just bad for your threads in the long run. next time you are out practicing your skids try a nice slow one and lean way forward. you'll feel that slack. then try it again and decrease the forward lean. repeat unitl you have something comfortable.

I am running a basic suzue hub now so it is crappy, but like I said I'm getting the iro wheel set next week and a new cog and lock-ring. I wasnt really leaning forward for the skids much at all.
