Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Bikes: unknown make TT bike, fixed; Romet Sport, gone; titanium Pinarello gone;Colnago with Campy C-Record/Super Record,on it's way; Funny Gianni Motta; Buehler track, Polrad track chrome; titanium MTB on 28'', fixed; Tri Wheeler, fixed

Tribute to 'nago I recenty bought, before it gets stripped of parts.

Impressions? Old Favorit studded cross edit: tubbies hold very well on snow and slush, at the same time they are surprisingly quiet, well holding and fast on paved road. Now I understand what a suicide hub is. This thing came with freewheel welded solid, yet nothing holds it to the hub body when back pressure is applied. I was glad I had both brakes when attempt at backpedaling resulted in unscrewing the freewheel.

Still, I will use the hub on my winter beater, maybe JBwelding it together with the freewheel.

Mavic 7sp, freewheel welded in four places.

A bike is pure utility - winter ride of one of our former pro roadies. No rear derailleur, front one just used as a chain guide, but it came with nice parts of value far exceeding what I paid for the bike.

I'd say go for a fixie conversion for winter. All you need is a new rear wheel/hub, or you could just run a front brake and do the suicide method...

nice looking bike whatever you decide to do, i'd go for a new backwheel myself.

Yeah seriously, do you realize what you got there? How much did you pay for it? You should wax it up too and dry it off well after your rides to make sure the chrome doesn't rust.

I am pretty well aware about the value of the 80' Colnago. This one was belonging to one of our top riders and was converted to his winter ride. Yet, the frame being stiff and light is not the most collectible - no chromed headset lugs, the cutouts in the lugs are just ovalized triangles etc. Utility over function.

I have paid $140, the thing has black 3ttt stem with "Ernesto Conago" and clover leaf pantographed, cobalto brakes with matching C-record levers as well as Record fluted seatpost. Other parts are mostly Super Record but not all. The value of parts several times exceeds the price I have paid. The components of these bikes were mixed and matched to suit particular rider.

I have another one from this era which begs finishing. That frame has 1 in 4 chance of belonging to the same rider. The funny Gianni Motta TT bike, disguised as Colnago for 1989 World championships deserves some of the parts of this 'nago.

Besides, I do like this bike and will find a use for it - just I would like more control for the winter then offered by 20 year old $200 speed attenuators combined with suicide hub

Funny, this is how these bikes were used in the winter - pure utility. The only thing I did to it was re-glueing the tubulars and checking everything.
