Too cold to ride in Chi-Town?

I don't mind riding in the snow either; it's just when there's a fresh load and basically one lane of traffic, passenger cars to make me a little more apprehensive, and cabs and buses are 10x worse. I hope we can sometime arrange some sort of "Snow Commander" ride ala Boston https://www.bikeforums.net/singlespeed-fixed-gear/90387-prospective-boston-snow-biking.html.

After riding through that mayhem (again, not the snow, the traffic+snow/slush), I'm gearing down (49x16 to 49x18) and putting on XC (30mm michelin sprint) tires under the assumption that both will offer better control. I'm probably wrong.

I just rode back from downtown and it was snowy as hell, sliding and skidding all over the place, nearly got run over like a bazillion times and all in all it was totally awesome. Cars are only going 5-10 mph anyway and as long as you ride smooth and stay upright you're pretty golden. One thing though is I totally gave up on trying to stay clipped in. Glad I got the flip-flop pedals. Every day this week I've ridden to work and every day I've shown up sweating and feeling like I wore too much. Windproofing and a balaclava are a must for me, after that it's all gravy.

usually my commute home takes about 12 minutes. today it took 15 in the fresh powder / crappy slushy streets. The best part not many of the cars I passed were moving. Traffic going south on Damen was stopped solid from grand to 18th. It was the most fun I have had on my bike in a long time. Sliding around alot but only took my foot off twice but never put it down. I want to go back out, maybe I will.

Let me just throw out there that, driving, my evening commute took 3 hours. I'd never wisht to be on a bike more.
