If you get a 3/32" cog, there should be no problem. You may have trouble getting your chainline right, though. I suspect, like me, you'll need to use the inner chainring position. Again, it'd be much better if you remove the other chainring. Consider the inner 40T (mine was) chainring when you're determining your gearing... I run a combination of 40x15 and 40x16 here in Scranton, PA. It's a sort of urban-mountainous area. Chainline will be the most important step in determining what you can and cannot do.

Thanks for the hint, I definately want to keep the taller gear, I like to keep a lower pace with the pedals + I live in Fort Lauderdale Florida... its basically 99.9% flat out here anyway !
Also, I wonder if I can just flip the taller ring on the other side of the crank so that it lines up better with the smallest cog on the back ... and then just ditch the smaller front ring all together ?
Do you think that would work ?

You will probably need to add some links to your chain when you get a fixed wheel, unless you want to stick with that sky-high gearing. A 52-18 is a more manageable sizing, and it allows you to keep your badass big chainring.
Chainline-wise, you might have to put your chainring on the inside of the spider, where the other chainring was. It's a common (if somewhat ugly) fix for roadie conversions.
Brakewise: I've done SS with it too, but I wouldn't want to do it for any extended amount of time. You've got a nice setup there, once you get a solid rear wheel on it you can be happy with it for a long time.

part of the beauty and fun of riding fixed gear is the higher cadence. I understand you might be geared slightly higher than my paltry 67"-72", but anything over probably 90" is (flame me if I'm wrong...) not such a great idea. I can really feel those extra 5 gear inches... 120" will be insane.

Also, I found this site from fixegeargallery of a guy who converted his shimano into a fixged gear.. turns out, I also have the same shimano freewheel thing on my bike... I'm gonna try this conversion after work and see how it goes for me......

That's not a freewheel. You don't have the same thing. you have a freewheel which you could conceivably replace with a track cog and bottom bracket lockring. You'd have to respace and redish the wheel, though. Do you have the correct shimano splined freewheel tool?

Ok, I broke down and ordered a track wheel, I'm told its a mavic (spelling?) with a good track hub on it (not sure of the brand) and a 15 tooth cog.
It is also custom made for the 27.x inch size that my bike uses.
now I have to hunt down a super deal on a new front wheel to match it ! LOL
sheesh.
It's just money.... let it burn ! I spent more on 1 wheel & cog than I did on the entire bike and the refurbishment parts!

yeah, there was a transition point at which the world sports started coming with decent parts. I mean, so long as you remove the stem shifters... mine came with clamp on downtube shifters.

See, the more important part would have been the hub. I wouldn't have blindly thrown the cash around. where did you buy it from? The fact that someone was so vague about the hub kinda fails the sniff test. also not so sure why you insisted on the 27"... since I was buying wheels anyhow, I got 700c's. That way I had a larger variety of possible tires.
Screw consumer awareness and preparedness... I hope your wheel doesn't suck.

How do you like the chopped and inverted bars relative to TT bullhorns? I also picked up a shiny black schwinn world sport two weeks ago for $3.00. I bought it for the fenders that were attached to it and then I gave it to a buddy who wanted it for exactly what you are doing. Nice bike!

for the record, 52/14 is not as rough as everyone seems to think as long as you're not trying to skid. I rode that ratio on my singlespeed for months until I got the dough to convert to fixed and dropped to 52/17.

the only thing about it that nagged me was the fact that starting up after a red light was super rough. if you were riding with two other guys, they'd be halfway down the next block before you're up to speed (but of course, once you're up to speed on a monster ratio like that, you just fly past pretty much anybody).

i kind of like a taller gear for that reason (slow takeoff, but holds the speed well). still, spinning's pretty important, and with a lower gear you can feel more imperfections in your spin. then get smaller and smaller rear cogs and larger chainrings and all....i still just like 39/15, but of course i'll move up.

Update on the conversion:
Yesterday I picked up the new wheel, it came out perfect, however the shop did not get the lockring for me on time... they said it should be in today so I'm going to send someone to pick it up since I got a flat on the way to work this morning and had to retire the bike for the day =(
Sheesh.
Now I have to buy a new tire and a new innertube since the gash was mighty big !!!
Update again: I just remembered the brand of the hub, its a flip flop Suzue basic and I don't know how many holes are on the wheel but its a SUN RIM and it looks like its made of aluminum.
=)
