Beer on board
Stupid question, I know. I'm in the process of building up my first fixie, and just wanted to get the lay of the land on important matters.... So, if your hammered, is it safer to be riding the fixie or the bike with gears? Thoughts?

WARNING:
prepare for a **** storm of stupid answers to a (no offense) stupid question.
If you can't ride ****ed up, don't ride ****ed up.
I personally never have riden with breaks on a fixed bike.. never ride anything else... ride ****ed up a couple times a week..
It's all relative to your abilties. I avoid traffic if possible... not because of them but because my reaction time is delayed.

i suppose what you're really talking about is reaction time when you need to stop. but whether you need to reach for a brake lever or lock your legs in a skid, either way your reactions are going to be slowed down.
if you don't know how to skip to a stop at will, then obviously a brake lever will be easier. if you do, then i'd think it doesn't really matter what you're riding.

hell, i've been riding brakeless for, what, 4 days and i'm going out for another beer as soon as i'm done here. malt likker's workin' on me, but i'm good to ride on a brakeless...you just have to get used to what you're on. plan routes accordingly. know your skill levels. also, i've found that after learning skipping and the basics of skidding, all emergency stops (so far) have been second nature...as much as i hate nike, the motto of stopping on a dime on a fixie--sober or drunk--is "just do it".

as salome well knows i love wine and usually have a beer or two whilst cookin' up my pasta dinners. i then have a bottle of wine (last night a pinot noir). post-prandially (about a half hour) i then went for a li'l ride. no problem whatsoever. your results may vary. just depends on your tolerance. personally, i'd run a brake.

i don't like riding home blacked out. it's happened a number of times where i wake up
and don't remember how i got home but there's my bike standing there in the hallway.
maybe it's kind of like luke skywalker putting on his deflector helmet during lightsaber training...
"use the force luke!"

You'd think it would be harder, but riding fixed sort of keeps you awake and aware. I also remember that riding anything but fixed used to make me really confused. "I'm approaching and an intersection and there's a car behind me, so I should... uhhh... what do these levers do?"

i was riding home on the geared bike one night, and i was pretty lit.
got to an intersection, tried to slow down by back-pedaling, and totally freaked out when my cranks spun backwards.
i ended up coasting around the corner, so i wouldn't go flying through the intersection.
